Zimbabwe elections: Nelson Chamisa says he's 'winning' and Emmerson Mnangagwa 'positive' as vote count continues

Zimbabwe's Emmerson Mnangagwa and opposition leader Nelson Chamisa have both claimed the lead as the country awaits the results of Monday's historic presidential election.  Official results of Zimbabwe's first presidential and parliamentary election without Robert Mugabe on the ballot are due to be announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission within five days.  But Mr Chamisa took to Twitter just hours after polls closed to claim victory for his MDC Alliance, a grouping of seven opposition parties. "Winning resoundingly...We now have results from the majority of the over 10 000 polling stations. We've done exceedingly well," he wrote in the early hours of Tuesday morning.  "Awaiting ZEC to perform their constitutional duty to officially announce the people's election results and we are ready to form the next gvt." Winning resoundingly...We now have results from the majority of the over 10 000 polling stations. We've done exceedingly well. Awaiting ZEC to perform their constitutional duty to officially announce the people's election results and we are ready to form the next gvt.#Godisinit— Nelson Chamisa (@nelsonchamisa) July 31, 2018 Mr Chamisa offered no evidence for his claim. He repeatedly said before the election that his victory was inevitable.  On Monday he accused the electoral commission of trying to suppress the MDC vote by creating large queues at urban polling stations.  Mr Mnangagwa, 75, said in his own statement on Tuesday morning that he was "waiting patiently for official results as per the constitution." But he added that he was receiving "extremely positive" information from Zanu PF polling agents on the ground.  "Good morning Zimbabwe. I am delighted by the high turnout and citizen engagement so far," he wrote on Twitter.  Good morning Zimbabwe. I am delighted by the high turnout and citizen engagement so far. The information from our reps on the ground is extremely positive! Waiting patiently for official results as per the constitution.— President of Zimbabwe (@edmnangagwa) July 31, 2018 Zimbabweans voted for presidential, parliamentary, and local government candidates in an election that is seen as a key test of Mr Mnangagwa's promise to break with the political violence of the Mugabe era.  The Zimbabwe Election Commission said on Monday night that average turnout was 75 percent. The only poll released ahead of the vote predicted a narrow gap between the two leading presidential candidates with Mr Mnangagwa just three percent ahead of Mr Chamisa.  Early results suggest Mr Chamisa's MDC Alliance has done well in its traditional stronghold of Harare, the capital city, claiming several parliamentary seats.  However, more than 60 percent of voters live in rural areas traditionally controlled by Mr Mnangagwa's Zanu PF.  Africa's tarnished jewel: how four decades of Robert Mugabe left Zimbabwe's economy reeling Zanu-PF have ruled Zimbabwe for 38 years and Mr Mnangagwa's near total dominance in the media makes him the front runner in the election.  He has sought to attract former opposition voters by publicly breaking with Mr Mugabe and promising a "New Dispensation" of democratic and economic reforms. However, Mr Chamisa has made  significant inroads into former Zanu PF strongholds in rural areas and has attracted large crowds at his rallies. EU observers said on Monday evening that the vote appeared to have mostly run smoothly but that it was too early to say whether it could be called free and fair.  They said there had been isolated instances of intimidation and poor organisation at some polling stations.......

North Korea appears to be building one or two ICBMs: Washington Post

North Korea appears to be building one or two new liquid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missiles at a factory that produced the country's first missiles capable of reaching the United States, the Washington Post reported on Monday. The newspaper, citing unidentified officials familiar with intelligence reporting, said U.S. spy agencies were seeing signs of the construction at a large research facility in Sanumdong, on the outskirts of Pyongyang. Rudy Giuliani's puzzling unfinished tweet brings out the best in Snark Twitter

It's no "covfefe," but really, can anything ever beat that? Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor and Donald Trump's perhaps overly talkative lawyer, sent out a tweet on Sunday morning that quickly went viral.  SEE ALSO: The internet mocks Alex Jones' conspiracy theory with #SecondCivilWarLetters It was clearly a mistake, and may now be serving as a helpful distraction for the beleaguered Giuliani. But it's prompted some first-class responses. First, here's the tweet. You — Rudy Giuliani (@RudyGiuliani) July 29, 2018 It's the kind of accidental posting any of us could share, and get roasted for. Twitter did exactly that.  Since signing on to represent Trump, Giuliani has gone on TV again and again to reinforce the president's lies. This past week he's been getting hammered in the news for saying that former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen "has lied all his life," a sharp reversal from Giuliani's earlier claims dating all the way back to May that Cohen is "honest" and "going to tell the truth."  That could be why "You" hasn't been deleted, especially after an unfinished Saturday night tweet from Giuliani also caught fire on social media.  Tons of folks took "You" as a musical cue ...Make Me Feel Brand Newhttps://t.co/BEyl9x5f04 https://t.co/tcxIKzPk9S — Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) July 29, 2018 .... you got what I neee-eeeed! cc: @BizMarkie https://t.co/QRflAaqhHb — Willie Geist (@WillieGeist) July 29, 2018 make me feel like a natural woman https://t.co/LCIs2PE43P — Alan McGuinness (@Alan_McGuinness) July 29, 2018 And IIIIIIIIIIIII-EEEEEE-IIIIIIII, will always love https://t.co/5dp9GRl8A6 — Fred Delicious (@Fred_Delicious) July 29, 2018 *steel drums play*""Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!Soulja Boy up in this hoWatch me crank it, watch me rollWatch me crank that Soulja BoyThen Superman that hoNow watch me... https://t.co/irvaFkeiMz — ‍ (@papagronda) July 29, 2018 Others used it to rib Giuliani ....are not a very good lawyer https://t.co/dhZmb5sGR5 — Molly Jong-Fast (@MollyJongFast) July 29, 2018 In which Rudy makes a public statement without making things worsehttps://t.co/GN41iXYyby — WouldOrWouldn'tHat (@Popehat) July 29, 2018 "You" As in "you" over there have you seen any of my dignity? Paul Manafort earned more than $60 million from Ukraine, Robert Mueller says ahead of trial

Donald Trump's former campaign manager made $60 million from Ukrainian lobbyists to fund a lavish lifestyle of antiques and tailored suits, prosecutors claimed on the eve of his trial. The figures emerged in court filings ahead of Paul Manafort's trial on Tuesday on tax and bank fraud charges. It is the first full tally provided by Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, of Mr Manafort's income from his work as a political consultant in Ukraine. Prosecutors claim that Mr Manafort, who ran the US president's election campaign for five months, hid more than $30 million of that sum in offshore accounts to evade taxes. During his three-week trial, prosecutors plan to lay out Mr Manafort's extensive dealings with the pro-Russian Ukrainian political party of Viktor Yanukovych, who was deposed as Ukraine's president in 2014. They claim that when Mr Manafort's income from consulting and foreign lobbying dried up, he lied to banks to get loans to maintain his lavish spending. Jurors will be shown photographs illustrating how he spent $6.4 million on properties in New York and Virginia, a further $7.3 million on renovating his homes and $820,000 on landscaping. In addition, he sent $2 million for rugs and antiques and almost $1.4 million on Beverly Hills tailored suits and designer clothes. In total $75 million flowed through his offshore accounts, according to court documents filed on Monday. It is the first trial to stem from Mr Mueller's extensive investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, and will give the American public its most detailed glimpse of what his team has found in the last year. Adding to the intrigue, Mr Manafort's deputy, Rick Gates, is expected to testify against him after cutting a plea deal with prosecutors. While the trial does not touch directly on Russian links to the Trump campaign, the outcome of the trial will be closely followed in Washington. An acquittal will boost the Trump administration's calls to have the Russia investigation - which they frequently refer to as a witch hunt - to be wound down. A conviction for Mr Manafort will add to Mr Mueller's credibility. Former New York City Mayor, Rudy Giuliani, is now on Mr Trump's legal team Credit: Getty Ahead of the trial, Mr Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, sought to distance Mr Manafort from the president, saying he "was not involved with intimate business relationships". "He has no information incriminating of the president. I know that for a fact. They can squeeze him - he doesn't know anything. He was with him for four months," he told CNN on Monday. Mr Giuliani went on to question whether collusion - the crux of Mr Mueller's investigation - is in fact a crime. "[Mr Trump's team are] not going to be colluding with Russia, which I don't even know if that's a crime, colluding about Russians," he said. "You start analysing the crime - the hacking is the crime. ... The President didn't hack." Russia investigation Legal experts have suggested that anyone found collaborating with Russia on the presidential election could be charged with crimes such as conspiracy or being an accessory to hacking. Since Mr Mueller took over the investigation last May, the special counsel has charged 32 people, including 26 Russians and several people linked to the Trump campaign. Five people, including Mr Gates, have pleaded guilty. Mr Manafort faces a second trial in Washington DC on related charges of acting as an unregistered foreign agent and lying to the government in September. The most serious charges against him carry prison sentences of up to 30 years each.  ......

Thomas Markle claims Duchess of Sussex has cut him off as he says daughter's mobile phone has been disconnected

Thomas Markle, the father of the Duchess of Sussex, has claimed he has not spoken to his daughter for more than ten weeks, and that the number he used to contact her on has been "cut off." He told The Mail on Sunday: "I'm really hurt that she's cut me off completely. I used to have a phone number and text number for her personal aides at the Palace, but after I said a few critical words about the Royal Family changing Meghan, they cut me off.  "Those numbers were disconnected, they no longer work. I have no way of contacting my daughter." The 73-year-old said he worries he has been frozen out of the family, and thinks he will not get to meet any children Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have. He said: "What's sad is that some time in the next year Meghan and Harry will have a baby and I'll be a grandfather, and if we're not speaking I won't see my grandchild." He believes he has been cut off from the Royal Family because of staged paparazzi photos which emerged in the weeks before the Royal Wedding, and for the statements he made to the press afterwards. Mr Markle, who lives in Mexico, made headlines around the globe last month when he gave an explosive interview to Good Morning Britain.  He claimed that Prince Harry had once told him to "give Donald Trump a chance", and also alleged the sixth-in-line to the throne had seemed "open" to the idea of Brexit. Thomas Markle Snr and his daughter Meghan Markle, in pictures Mr Markle used the interview as an opportunity to apologise for his  about his own actions before the wedding, saying:  "I accept full responsibility. I can say I'm sorry for those things for the rest of my life, but I'm paying for those things for the rest of my life. "But as long as they're happy and have a great life and have some beautiful children and do good things in the world, I'm can't ask for more."......

Tamimi, 17, and her mother Nariman arrived in their village of Nabi Saleh in the occupied West Bank, where they were met by crowds of supporters and journalists "The resistance continues until the fall of the occupation, and of course the (female) prisoners in jail are all strong," Ahed Tamimi said, her voice barely audible above the crowd. "I thank everyone who supported me in this sentence and supports all the prisoners." Her father Bassem put his arms around Ahed and her mother as they walked together along the road, the crowd chanting "we want to live in freedom". Tamimi later visited the tomb of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in Ramallah and laid flowers there, before meeting Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas. Ahed Tamimi, 17 Abbas "praised Ahed and described her as a model of the Palestinian struggle for freedom, independence and statehood," according to a statement on official news agency WAFA. "He stressed that non-violent resistance which Ahed embodies has proven to be an ideal and vital weapon in facing the repression of the Israeli occupation." Israeli authorities appeared keen to avoid media coverage of the release as much as possible, and conflicting information had meant supporters and journalists scrambled to arrive on time at the correct location. Tamimi and her mother had been driven early on Sunday from Israel's Sharon prison into the occupied West Bank, authorities said. But the location of the checkpoint where they were to cross into the territory was changed three times before it was finally announced they were being taken to a crossing at Rantis, about an hour's drive from the initial location. Both Tamimi and her mother were sentenced to eight months in an Israeli military court following a plea deal over the December incident, which the family said took place in their garden in Nabi Saleh. They were released some three weeks early, a common practice by Israeli authorities due to overcrowded prisons, Tamimi's lawyer Gaby Lasky said. Tamimi visits the Mausoleum of former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, following their release from Israeli Prison in Ramallah Credit:  Anadolu Video of the December incident went viral, leading Palestinians to view her as a hero standing up to Israel's occupation. Tamimi was arrested in the early hours of December 19, four days after the incident in the video. She was 16 at the time. Her mother Nariman was also arrested, as was her cousin Nour, who was freed in March. Israel's military said the soldiers had been in the area on the day of the incident to prevent Palestinians from throwing stones at Israeli motorists. The video shows the cousins approaching two soldiers and telling them to leave, before shoving, kicking and slapping them. Ahed Tamimi is the most aggressive of the two in the video. The heavily armed soldiers do not respond in the face of what appears to be an attempt to provoke rather than seriously harm them. Many Israelis also praised the restraint of the soldiers, who remained calm throughout, though others said her actions merited a tougher response. The soldiers then move backwards after Nariman Tamimi becomes involved. The scuffle took place amid clashes and protests against US President Donald Trump's controversial recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Relatives say that a member of the Tamimi family was wounded in the head by a rubber bullet fired during those protests.  ......

Cambodia ruling party claims landslide election win after opposition banned in 'sham' vote

Cambodia's ruling party said it had won a landslide in Sunday's one-horse election, an expected outcome after the main opposition was banned paving the way for leader Hun Sen to prolong his 33 years in power. Hun Sen, who came to power in 1985 in a country still plagued by civil war, has cracked down on dissent in the run-up to this year's poll, pressuring civil society, independent media and political opponents. That left him with little competition and no serious challengers. Cambodian People's Party (CPP) spokesman Sok Eysan told AFP late Sunday they expected to win "over 100 seats" in the 125-seat parliament, citing preliminary figures from the National Election Committee. "The CPP will get more than 80 percent of the popular vote," he said. "This is a huge victory for us." Hun Sen, 65, a one-time defector from the brutal Khmer Rouge regime, has pointed to stability and growth as the fruits of his rule - a message that resonates with his base. Freedom index rank: Cambodia "Compatriots have chosen the democratic path and used your rights," he said on his Facebook page after polls closed in an apparent swipe at the opposition, which called for a boycott. Voter turnout was 82 percent, according to the election committee, surpassing the final figure in 2013 of roughly 69 percent when the opposition took part. Pictures of spoiled ballots circulated on social media, though they could not be independently verified. AFP correspondents saw dozens of blank ballots set aside during counting. "I did not go to vote. I slept at home," said Khem Chan Vannak, a former commune chief elected with the now-banned opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP). "A lot of my friends did not go to vote." The CNRP appealed to Cambodians not to vote in the "sham election that has no support and is not recognised by the international community".......

By MacDonald Dzirutwe and Joe Brock HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabweans voted on Monday in the first election since the removal of former president Robert Mugabe, a watershed moment they hope will rid the country of its pariah status and spark a recovery in its failed economy. The election pits 75-year-old President Emmerson Mnangagwa, a long-time Mugabe ally, against 40-year-old Nelson Chamisa, a lawyer and pastor vying to become Zimbabwe's youngest head of state. On the eve of the election, Mugabe emerged from eight months of obscurity since the military ousted him in a bloodless coup, to announce he would vote for the opposition, surprising former ally Mnangagwa who accused him of striking a deal with Chamisa.......

Terrifying first-person footage shows just how devastating the wildfires in Greece are

First-person footage of flames engulfing a neighborhood shows just how devastating the wildfires in Greece are.  A man trying to save his friend's cat caught the wildfire on video as it burned through the trees surrounding his home. Within the video's short span of time, just three-and-a-half minutes, the fire approaches and starts to consume the house. SEE ALSO: Devastating photos show the impact of deadly wildfires in Athens According to an English-language version of a local paper, the Cyprus Times, the person who recorded the video is safe. The severe wildfires near Athens has claimed 91 lives over the past week, the Associated Press says. A number of victims drowned in the sea while trying to flee the fire. According to the Centre for the Research on Epidemiology of Disasters in Brussels, this is the deadliest wildfire Europe has seen since 1900. The fire started on July 23 in Mati, a small village just outside of Athens, and spread without warning. Since then, it's ravaged the coast and prompted Greece to ask for aid from the European Union.  During a Sunday memorial service at the local church in Mati, the Holy Synod — a ruling body of bishops in the Greek Orthodox Church — said in a letter that "everyone bears responsibility for protecting the environment from haphazard development."  The unprecedented heat waves scorching Europe have been boosted by climate change. According to NOAA, Greece is experiencing one of its hottest years on record. Thanks to a lack of steady rainfall, heavy winds, and extremely dry forests, Greece's "tinderbox conditions" make wildfires almost inevitable.  Rising temperatures are an international issue — although we're just over halfway through 2018, global warming is already apparent.  WATCH: Veterinarians are using fish skin to help heal bear paw burns from wildfires......

MH370 investigators say they can't rule out 'unlawful interference' as final report leaves relatives disappointed

Investigators released a report on missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 on Monday, saying the Boeing 777's controls were likely deliberately manipulated to take it off course but they were not able to determine who was responsible. The 495-page report draws no conclusion about what happened aboard the plane that vanished with 239 people on board en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur on March 8, 2014, leaving one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries unsolved. "The answer can only be conclusive if the wreckage is found," Kok Soo Chon, head of the MH370 safety investigation team, told reporters. On May 29, Malaysia called off a three-month search by US firm Ocean Infinity, which spanned 112,000 sq km (43,243 sq miles) in the southern Indian Ocean and ended with no significant findings. It was the second major search after Australia, China and Malaysia ended a fruitless A$200 million (£112.06 million) search across an area of 120,000 sq km (46,332 sq miles) last year. Sarah Nor, the mother of Norliakmar Hamid, a passenger on missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, cries as she arrives for the final investigation report Credit:  MOHD RASFAN/ AFP Malaysian and international investigators have been looking into why the jet veered thousands of miles off course from its scheduled route before eventually plunging into the Indian Ocean. The last communication from the plane was from the Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah who signed off with "Good night, Malaysian three seven zero", as the plane left the Malaysian airspace and later turned off course. A 440-page final report by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) last year showed that Zaharie had flown a route on his home flight simulator six weeks earlier that was "initially similar" to the one actually taken by MH370. The Malaysian police previously concluded there were no unusual activity on the home simulator. Kok said the investigators examined the history of the pilot and the first officer, and they were satisfied with their background and training and mental health. "We are not of the opinion it could have been an event committed by the pilots," he said, but added they were not ruling out any possibility since the in-air turn back was done manually and the systems in the plane were also manually turned off. "We cannot exclude that there was an unlawful interference by a third party," Kok said. He added all the passengers of the 15 countries had their backgrounds checked by their respective countries and all came back with a clean bill of health. Conspiracy theories The inability to locate MH370's crash site has fuelled conspiracy theories and online debates over the last four years. Theories range from mechanical error or a remote-controlled crash, to more bizarre explanations like alien abduction and a Russian plot. Kok said they looked into each theory and rumour raised on social media. "We had over 60 allegations...we removed them one-by-one and saw what remained behind," Kok said. Rayan Gharazeddine scans the water in the southern Indian Ocean off Australia from a Royal Australian Air Force AP-3C Orion during a search for the missing plane in 2014 Credit: Rob Griffith/AP The report said there was no sign the plane was evading radar detection or that it was taken over by remote control. No irregularities were found in the on-board cargo, which included items like lithium batteries and about 2,500 kgs of mangosteen. Mistakes made In all, 27 pieces of aircraft debris have been collected from various places around the world but only three wing fragments that washed up along the Indian Ocean coast have been confirmed to be from MH370. Malaysia's newly elected Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has said Malaysia would consider resuming the search only if new clues come to light. Investigators highlighted some mistakes made by the Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh City air traffic control centres and made safety recommendations to ensure such incidents do not occur again. Film of woman 'punched' for confronting wolf-whistler shocks France as fines set to be introduced

A film of a man hitting a woman in the face in central Paris after she told him to "shut up" for harassing her in the street has shocked France and prompted an investigation. Social media posts of Marie Laguerre on her ordeal have prompted outrage and a pledge by France's gender equality minister to start imposing on-the-spot fines for street harassment this autumn.  The 22-year old student was walking home in Paris' 19th arrondissement last week when she was accosted by a young man at the terrace of a bar in broad daylight. Marlène Schiappa, France's gender equality minister, called the assault an attack on the "freedom of women" as she backed plans to introduce on the spot fines for harassment including wolf-whistling. Describing her deal on social media, Ms Laguerre wrote in English: "I walked past a man who sexually/verbally harassed me." "He wasn't the first one and I can't accept being humiliated like that, so I replied 'shut up'," she wrote. "He then threw an ashtray at me, before rushing back to punch me, in the middle of the street, in front of dozens of people." She later told Le Parisien that he had insulted her repeatedly, wagged his tongue and made sexually suggestive "groans". The attacker was immediately confronted by witnesses at the bar Credit: Telegraph The bar's CCTV caught the incident on camera. It shows a woman in red walking past the bar before being pursued by a man in black who violently hits her face and walks off.  Several bystanders at the terrace then immediately stand up and try and intervene, preventing the man from approaching Ms Laguerre. He then walks off, and she too walks out of view. Describing his behaviour as "unacceptable", Ms Laguerre wrote: "It happens everyday, everywhere and I don't know a single woman who doesn't have a similar story. I am sick of feeling unsafe waking in the street. Things need to change, and they need to change now." She ended the outburst with the hashtag Metoo, launched in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein sex scandal in Hollywood last year. The Youtube film of the attack has been viewed 8000,000 times and her comments on Facebook and Twitter have prompted hundreds of messages of support. Parce que j'ai répondu à son harcèlement, un homme m'a frappée en pleine rue, en pleine journée, devant des dizaines de témoins. Inadmissible. Stop au harcèlement de rue. #noustoutes#metoo#balancetonporc#harcelementderue@MarleneSchiappahttps://t.co/lV9AIKndlX— Marie Laguerre (@may_lgr) 28 July 2018 Speaking to Le Parisien, she said she was suffering from a "damaged cheek bone and eyebrow". "I knew he was coming to hit me, it was clear from his gestures, it was clear from the exchange of words and his intentions," she said in a filmed interview. She added: "He rushed towards me. I looked at him straight in the eyes. And I took the blow with the utmost pride just to show him that if he thought he could put me back in my place, it hadn't worked." She filed a legal complaint against persons unknown and on Monday the Paris prosecutor launched an investigation into "sexual harassment and violence with a weapon (an ashtray)". Marlene Schiappa, France's minister for gender equality, insists that on-the-spot fines for wolf-whistlers will "lower the tolerance level" of street harassment  Credit: Christopher Goodney/Bloomberg She said she was amazed at the scale of online reaction and felt "lucky" that her ordeal had been caught on film as it sent a powerful message about a pervasive problem. "I don't know a single female friend who hasn't been harassed or sexually assaulted. It's got to stop," she said. Ms Laguerre praised bystanders for intervening and bar management for handing over the film of the incident. They did not try and apprehend the man but prevented him from approaching her a second time before he marched off. Asked for a reaction, Marlène Schiappa, France's gender equality minister, said: "The stakes are serious: they are about the freedom of women to move move about freely

EU trying to 'swindle' UK in Brexit talks: report
