A grandmother from Georgia, US, fought off a rabid bobcat with her bare hands, wrestling with it and silently strangling the wild animal as it clawed at her face. DeDe Phillips, 46, was well aware of how dangerous the animals could be.  Bobcats are America's most numerous wild cat with a population of around a million. "It was either me or the cat and it was going to be the cat that day," she said.  "They go for your jugular. Because when they can get the vein you're dead in a couple of minutes." Ms Phillips was outside her home in Hart County, nearly 110 miles northeast of Atlanta, on June 7. She had just bought a new 4x4, and heard dogs barking as she was affixing a bumper sticker on the vehicle, reading: "Women who behave rarely make history." A bobcat hunting in the Yellowstone National Park Credit: BBC She had never seen a bobcat near the property before, and took a photo of the big cat - before it lunged at her. "As soon as it took the first step, I was in trouble and I knew it," she said. The animal jumped at her, claws bared. "It caught me slightly on my face, but I got him before he could do much damage there," she told her local news site, OnlineAthens.  "I took it straight to the ground and started inching my hands up to its throat. I knew that was the only way I was getting out of this." Her five-year-old granddaughter was sleeping inside the house, so Ms Phillips, worried shouts and screams might bring the child outside, struggled in silence. "I started praying, don't let her come to the door," she said. A photo of the dead bobcat, taken by Ms Phillips' family Credit: WFMZ When finally the bobcat stopped moving, Ms Phillips shouted for her daughter-in-law to call 911 and her son, she told OnlineAthens. Her hands, however, stayed clenched around the bobcat's motionless neck — Ms Phillips wasn't sure if the animal was really dead.  "My son stabbed it four or five times, but it never budged so I knew it was completely dead," she said. The dead bobcat tested positive for rabies and Ms Phillips was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for cuts and gashes, as well as broken fingers.  She also is undergoing treatment with the rabies vaccine.......

Trump criticises Germany over 'violent' border policy and says 'US will not be a migrant camp'

Donald Trump has attacked Germany's migration policies as criticism of child detention centres at the US-Mexico border intensifies. Mr Trump, the US president, used social media to falsely suggest that the influx of asylum seekers in Germany has caused a spike in crime. On Monday morning, he tweeted: "The people of Germany are turning against their leadership as migration is rocking the already tenuous Berlin coalition. Crime in Germany is way up. Big mistake made all over Europe in allowing millions of people in who have so strongly and violently changed their culture!" He added: "We don't want what is happening with immigration in Europe to happen with us!" Images released on Monday morning showed segregated children detained in cages inside a warehouse in Texas, after journalists were given access for the first time. The segregation has triggered an international outcry, with the UN human rights chief on Monday urged Washington to stop separating migrant children from their parents at the US border, describing the policy as "unconscionable". A two-year-old Honduran asylum seeker cries as her mother is searched and detained near the US-Mexico border on June 12, 2018 Credit: John Moore/Getty Images Germany opened its doors to more than one million asylum seekers in 2015, a policy much criticised at home and abroad that has in recent days looked as though it might derail the coalition government.  Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, defended her decision to welcome migrants, saying: "It was an extraordinary situation and I made my decision based on what I thought was right from a political and humanitarian standpoint." His tweets came as senior Republicans continued to call into question the hardline policy. Melania Trump, the first lady, also appeared to question the treatment of migrants. In a statement last night she said she "hates to see children separated from their families", while the former first lady Laura Bush said the policy "breaks my heart". Mr Trump continued, saying that Democrats were to blame for the state of affairs.  "It is the Democrats fault for being weak and ineffective with Boarder Security and Crime (sic)," he said.  "Tell them to start thinking about the people devastated by Crime coming from illegal immigration. Change the laws!" Crime has fallen off dramatically in Germany, with the country's internal ministry reporting last month that criminal offenses in Germany totaled 5.76 million in 2017, the lowest number since 1992, leading to the lowest crime rate for the country in more than 30 years. Mrs Merkel's open-door migrant policy is widely blamed for the rise of the right-wing AfD, now the main opposition party in Germany's federal parliament. More than 1.6 million migrants, mostly Muslims fleeing wars in the Middle East, have arrived in Germany since 2014.  The separations are a consequence of the Trump administration policy announced in April, that maximises criminal prosecutions of people caught trying to enter the US illegally. That means more adults are jailed, pending trial, so their children are removed from them. Defending his administration's harsh immigration policies later on Monday, Mr Trump added that the US wouldn't be a "migrant camp" or "refugee holding facility." Speaking in front of assembled media at an event on US space policy, Mr Trump said: "Not on my watch." He went on, saying that there is "death and destruction" caused by people entering the US illegally. He said: "A country without borders is not a country at all."......

US governors announce they will withhold state help at border amid immigrant family separation controversy

Several American governors have announced that they will move to keep state resources from helping to support President Donald Trump's "zero-tolerance" immigration policies that have resulted in thousands of children being taken from their parents after entering the United States. The governors of Massachusetts, New York, and Colorado have all announced that they will suspend either state resources or their state's national guard forces from helping to enforce the controversial policies, which have resulted in at least 2,000 children being taken from their parents after crossing the border, according to reports. Of those, one governor — Charlie Baker, of Massachusetts — is a Republican, while the other two — Andrew Cuomo, of New York, and John Hickenlooper, of Colorado — are Democrats.......

Toyota confirms production of 986bhp GR Super Sport

Since the Toyota MR2 went out of production in 2007 there hasn't been much evidence of sportiness in the Japanese automaker's lineup beyond the somewhat underpowered GT86, but that's about to change in a big way as it's now been confirmed a production version of the 986 horsepower GR Super Sport is in the pipeline. At the moment we only have images of the concept first shown at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January of this year, but news of a production version was released by Toyota on the eve of the Les Mans 24 hour race. This isn't the first time Toyota has looked at building a production Le Mans racer, because in 1998 the company brought us the GT-One (TS020) Le Mans Prototype where a road-going concept was produced with a view towards building a handful of production models.......

South Korea came up with a very creative tactic to use against Sweden in the World Cup

Whenever you bring together dozens of different countries from around the globe, there's gonna be some cross-cultural confusion. And if you're South Korean coach Shin Tae-yong, you figure out how to work that to your advantage. SEE ALSO: World Cup opening game proved a little tricky for people with colour blindness In a press conference Sunday, Shin explained the unusual tactic he'd employed against spies from the Swedish team: He'd had his team members swap jersey numbers for the warmup games, in hopes that scouts would confuse the players for one another.  "It's very difficult for Westeners to distinguish between Asians, and that's why we did that," Shin explained, as quoted by ESPN. Although Shin's specific plan is unique, it's one in a long string of reports of subterfuge between South Korea and Sweden in the lead-up to their World Cup match. Swedish coach Janne Andersson apologized to the South Korean team Sunday for an incident in which a Swedish scout was caught looking in on a South Korean practice in Austria.  According to Andersson, the scout had not realized it was a closed session. "He watched from more of a distance as a result," said Andersson. The scout also observed his South Korean rivals by borrowing a local house with a view of the training facility.  "It took a long car journey up the mountains to reach the house, but it was a perfect spot to observe the Korean team's training," said Lars Jacobsson, a member of the Swedish coaching staff. Sweden, for their part, has complained that their own base was too easy to spy on.  Shin seems to be keeping all this drama in perspective, however.  "I think all coaches probably feel that way, that the other team is spying on them," he said. "We have to analyze the other team and we do what we can to win the match, so I think it's perfectly natural for us to try to understand the other team." We'll see if Shin's inventive ploy pays off when South Korea faces Sweden in Russia on Monday. WATCH: Sports journalists in Brazil have had it with sexual harassment on the job......

Former Israeli government minister charged with spying for Iran

A former Israeli government minister, once imprisoned for trying to smuggle drugs, is back behind bars after being charged with spying for archenemy Iran, the country's internal security agency said Monday. The Shin Bet, the Israeli security agency, said Gonen Segev was extradited from Guinea and arrested upon arrival in Israel last month on suspicion of "committing offenses of assisting the enemy in war and spying against the state of Israel." It said Mr Segev, a former energy minister, acted as an agent for Iranian intelligence and relayed information "connected to the energy market and security sites in Israel including buildings and officials in political and security organizations." Lawyers representing Mr Segev issued a statement that did not reject or accept the accusations, only saying that the indictment "portrays a different picture" than what the Shin Bet says. Mr Segev, who served in the Cabinet under Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in the mid-1990s, was arrested in 2004 for attempting to smuggle 32,000 Ecstasy tablets from the Netherlands to Israel using an expired diplomatic passport.  Former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin speaks with former energy minister Gonen Segev Credit: REUTERS/GPO A former doctor whose medical license was revoked, Mr Segev was released from prison in 2007 and had been living in Africa in recent years. The Shin Bet said Mr Segev met with his operators twice in Iran, and also met with Iranian agents in hotels and apartments around the world. Mr Segev was given a "secret communications system to encrypt messages" with his operators. The statement said that Mr Segev maintained connections with Israeli civilians who had ties to the country's security and foreign relations. It said he acted to connect them with Iranian agents who posed as businessmen. Israel and Iran are bitter enemies, and the allegations against Mr Segev are extremely grave. Israel considers Iran to be its biggest threat, citing Iranian calls for Israel's destruction, Iran's support for hostile militant groups like Hezbollah and its development of long-range missiles.......
