The future of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano is written in the Big Island's past

Looming above Kilauea's glowing lava rivers and explosions of ash, is the most massive mountain on Earth. Measured from its deep ocean base, the Mauna Loa volcano is taller than Mount Everest. It takes up over half of the Big Island.  And it's an omen of what's to come for Kilauea.  Hawaii's currently erupting and youngest volcano, Kilauea, peers up at Mauna Loa from some 9,000 feet below. Its latest bursts of lava, which started in early May and have since rumbled through neighborhoods, remind us that Kilauea is next in line to become a dominant presence on the Big Island, like Mauna Loa. SEE ALSO: Deep beneath the Pacific, another active Hawaiian volcano waits to emerge In the next 1,000 years or so, lava will almost certainly flow over nearly every inch of road and in every neighborhood on the volcano, as it continues growing. There's good precedent for this. Today, 90 percent of the volcano, located on the southeastern corner of the Big Island, is covered in lava that's less than 1,000 years old.  Mauna Loa, though far more ancient, once behaved in much the same way. The volcano emerged from the ocean some 300,000 years ago, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) believes it has "grown rapidly upward since then." "There's no reason to expect the events of Kilauea will be very much different than those that took place at Mauna Loa," Stanley Mertzman, a geoscientist at Franklin and Marshall College, said in an interview. Kilauea sits to the right and below of Mauna Loa. Historic lava flows from both volcanoes are shown in light grey.Image: National Park Service"The only difference is there was no audience," said Mertzman of Mauna Loa, who has hiked to the snow-covered summit the volcano with his geology students. How big will Kilauea get? The first people landed on the Hawaiian islands some 1,500 years ago, when Mauna Loa was already the dominant Hawaiian mountain. Since then, however, Hawaiians have regularly witnessed Kilauea erupt and grow larger as molten rock poured into the sea.   Since 1983 alone, Kilauea has added around 570 acres of new land to the Big Island, and geologists expect the volcano to continue adding layer upon layer, building out and up like Mauna Loa, which is Hawaiian for "Long Mountain."  "If you look at Kilauea today and look back at the rather imposing Mauna Loa structure — that, simply, is what Kilauea will look like," said Mertzman. Snow-covered Mauna Loa looms over the Hawaiian countryside.Image: Getty Images/Lonely Planet ImagesIt will be quite similar in shape (Hawaiian volcanoes mature into gentle-sloping profiles) and quite big, but it's less certain if it will ever meet Mauna Loa's extraordinary height and girth. The source of magma (underground lava) for Hawaiian volcanoes is a stationary "hot spot," a place underneath Earth's crust where rocks melt and then regularly ooze out, flowing up to the surface through subterranean channels. But exactly how that single hot spot ultimately feeds the Big Island's five volcanoes varies.  Of these five volcanoes, four will erupt again, said Jess Phoenix, a geologist that has sampled, hiked over, and studied the Big Island's volcanoes. "That's a lot of demand on the hot spot," Phoenix, who is running for Congress in California, said. "So it would be interesting to see how Kilauea reacts." An artist's conception of the Pacific tectonic plate traveling over the hot spot.Image: usgsMauna Loa isn't the only giant presence on the Big Island. Its snow-capped neighbor, Mauna Kea, while not taking up as much mass or girth as Mauna Loa, is around 800 feet taller. Kilauea could become the third huge Big Island mountain. "It's very possible that it could become the triplet," said Phoenix. But, she noted that Mauna Loa is truly exceptional. It would be hard to top. "It's extraordinary how big it is," she said. "It's the largest mountain on the planet." Kilauea, though, is keeping up a good pace. In 1955, the volcano poured lava over 4,000 acres of the island, sa

Mattis says U.S. to continue operations in South China Sea

By Idrees Ali ABOARD A U.S. MILITARY AIRCRAFT (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Tuesday that the United States would continue to confront what Washington sees as China's militarization of islands in the South China Sea, despite drawing condemnation from Beijing for an operation in the region over the weekend. Reuters first reported that two U.S. Navy warships sailed near South China Sea islands claimed by China on Sunday, even as President Donald Trump seeks Chinese cooperation on North Korea. The operation, known as "freedom of navigation," was the latest attempt to counter what Washington sees as Beijing's efforts to limit freedom of navigation in the strategic waters, where Chinese, Japanese and some Southeast Asian navies operate.......

Salisbury doctors did not believe Skripals would survive Novichok poisoning

The doctors who treated the Skripals following the Salisbury Novichok attack did not believe the former Russian spy and his daughter would survive, they have revealed.  Medics at Salisbury District Hospital said that the prognosis for Sergei and Yulia Skripal was not good when they first arrived in the Accident and Emergency department on March 4 after collapsing on a park bench in the city.  Dr Stephen Jukes, Intensive Care consultant, told BBC Newsnight: "When we first were aware this was a nerve agent we were expecting them not to survive. We would try all our therapies. We would ensure the best clinical care. But all the evidence was there that they would not survive." He added that the medical team initially thought the pair had succumbed to an opioid overdose, but the diagnosis quickly changed  to nerve agent poisoning.  They were heavily sedated and given large doses of drugs designed to help their bodies produce a key protective enzyme.  Russian spy poisoning | Read more Staff were concerned that the illness could spread, particularly after PC Nick Bailey, a police officer who became unwell after visiting Mr Skripal's home, was also brought in for treatment.   Lorna Wilkinson, the Director of Nursing at the hospital, said: " "I suppose the key marker for me was when the PC [Nick Bailey] was admitted with symptoms - there was a real concern as to how big could this get." She said she remembered thinking: "'have we just gone from having two index patients [to] having something that actually could become all-consuming and involve many casualties?' because we really didn't know at that point."  Sergei and Yulia Skripal photographed having a meal while fit and healthy Credit: supplied by pixel8000 Medical staff also said they had no idea of the future prognosis for any of those affected by the nerve agent.  Dr Christine Blanshard, medical director at the hospital, told the programme, "the honest answer is we don't know". The medical team at the hospital had also been helped by their proximity to Porton Down laboratory, they revealed, as it offered to carry out testing and give advice on the best therapies.  Dr Duncan Murray, head of the intensive care department, said "international experts" had helped the three to recover, alongside the "excellent teamwork by the doctors, fantastic care and dedication by our nurses".  Members of the emergency services in green biohazard encapsulated suits afix a tent over the bench on which the Skripals were found Credit: BEN STANSALL /AFP All three have now been discharged, with Mr Skripal leaving hospital the most recently, on May 18, after 10 weeks of treatment. In her first appearance since leaving hospital, Ms Skripal spoke to the news agency Reuters at a secret London location last week.  She said she felt she and her father were "lucky to both have survived this attempted assassination". She added: "I don't want to describe the details, but the physical treatment was invasive, painful and depressing." The British government has accused Russia of being behind the attack, expelling 23 Russian diplomats in retaliation.  It has denied any involvement and expelled British diplomats from Moscow, as well as questioning the legitimacy of Ms Skripal's statement.  In a statement, it said: "The UK is obliged to give us the opportunity to speak to Yulia directly in order to make sure that she is not held against her own will and is not speaking under pressure."......

Belgium shooting: 'Radicalised' prisoner on day release kills two female police officers in Liege

A suspected terrorist on day release from prison executed two female police officers with their own guns and shot dead a trainee teacher before he was killed in a shootout after taking two women hostage at a school in the centre of the Belgian city of Liege. The bloody rampage on Tuesday morning, which left another four officers wounded, was captured on videos on social media, which showed the black clad man waving a pistol in each hand and shouting "Allahu Akbar" before he was gunned down by elite officers. Belgium's federal prosecutors office has opened an terror investigation into the attack. The "lone wolf" attacker, 36, was named locally as Benjamin Herman, who was well-known to police for a string of crimes including robbery, assault and drug-dealing and was from Rochefort, a city about an hour from Liege. One officer was named in local media reports as Soraya Belkacemi, 45, a widowed mother of twins, who are now orphaned. The other was Lucile Garcia, 53, who was described by fellow officers as a "fantastic colleague" who had married her partner a month ago.   Herman was granted temporary release from prison on Monday night until Tuesday, despite a prison service assessment that judged him "ultra-violent" and that he was on a terror watchlist over suspicions he had become radicalised in 2017. Such "family leave" is meant to help prisoners prepare for their eventual release, which would have been in 2020 in Herman's case after he had served the sentence he began in 2013. He had been released for two days on 13 previous occasions. Belgium's federal prosecutors office has opened an terror investigation into the murders, which come after the country was accused of being a hotbed of extremism after the 2015 Paris attacks, which killed 130 people. and suicide bombings in Brussels in 2016 in which 32 died. The country's intelligence services came under intense scrutiny for apparently missing a series of leads after the Paris attacks that could have led to the Brussels bombers. "He has been reported or presumed to be belonging to the entourage of an Islamist recruiter," a source close to the investigation told AFP. Police have found a koran and prayer mat in the convert's cell. Confirming that the attacker was on the police watchlist, lawmaker George Dallemagne, who sits on several Belgian parliamentary security committees, tweeted: "The supervision of radicalised prisoners remains tragically flawed." Forensic officers scour the scene for clues Credit: Geert Vanden Wijngaert /AP "It is clear that the assassin's objective was to attack the police," said Christian Beaupere, the head of the Liege police force. The Liege prosecutor's office said the gunman had "hunted down" the two police officers, who were checking parking meters, before attacking them from behind with a box cutter on a boulevard in the heart of Belgium's third city at about 10.30am local time.    After stabbing the officers, aged 45 and 53, multiple times, Herman took the officers' guns and shot them dead before opening fire on his next victim, who was sitting in his car. He was named by local press as Cyril Vangriecken, a 22-year-old trainee teacher from Vottem, a nearby town.   Armed Belgian police walk past the scene of the shooting in the centre of Liege Credit: Geert Vanden Wijngaert/AP  Herman entered a nearby high school about 100 yards away and took two female employees, one a cleaning lady, hostage, which forced armed police to swing into action. Pupils were evacuated to safety and people in the street raced for cover in the ensuing gunbattle when Herman came out firing at police. Four officers were wounded, two in the legs and two in the arms, before Herman was finally "neutralised" about 30 minutes after he launched his initial attack. The cleaner was reported to be "safe and healthy". A major security cordon was set up around the area, while panicked parents came to collect their unhurt children from the school complex. The national crisis centre said

Anti-Putin Russian journalist shot dead in Ukraine capital

A prominent Russian journalist known for his sharp criticism of Vladimir Putin has been murdered in the Ukrainian capital.  Arkady Babchenko, 41, was found by his wife in a pool of blood at their Kiev apartment on Monday evening night. He had been shot in the back.  He died in the ambulance on the way to hospital, Ukrainian police said.  Babchenko, who became one of Russia's most famous war correspondents after writing a memoir of his service as a conscript and later professional solider in the Chechen wars, went into exile in 2017 saying he had received multiple threats to himself and his family.  He had emerged as a bitter online critic of the Putin government in recent years, posting regular blogs attacking the Kremlin on his Facebook page.  Babchenko had fled Russia over fears to his safety Credit: Akrady Babchenko/Facebook He had in turn been attacked by pro-Kremlin and nationalist politicians and activists, who have in the past called him a "fifth columnist." Babchenko appeared to reference even more serious threats just hours before he died. In a Tweet posted Monday afternoon, he wrote: "When the president's representative openly posts an offer to have you killed." The Tweet linked to a Facebook post from 2014, later deleted, in which he said Marina Yudenich, who formerly worked for the Kremlin, had called on Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov to " invite me for tea." The day before his death, Babchenko was worried about Putin & Kadyrov. This is allegedly the 2014 post he referenced in his tweet & then deleted. In it, he says one of Putin's election representatives had asked Kadyrov to "invite me to tea," a veiled threat pic.twitter.com/ZBvA7LvdPI— Alec Luhn (@ASLuhn) May 29, 2018 Mr Kadyrov is widely believed to be linked to the murders of several prominent Kremlin critics, including the 2015 assassination of opposition leader Boris Nemtsov in Moscow.  Babchenko's murder comes two years after Pavel Sheremet, a prominent liberal Belarussian journalist, was killed in a car bombing in Kiev. Sheremet's murder has not been solved.  In October last year Amina Okueva, a Chechen rebel fighter who had fought on the Ukrainian side against Russian forces in east Ukraine, was gunned down in Kiev. Her husband, Adam Osmaev, had  survived a previous assassination attempt in the city.  Ukrainian police officers guard in the entrance to Babchenko's home in Kiev after his body was found Much of Babchenko's ire for the Kremlin sprang from his experiences on its battlefields.  His war memoir, One Soldier's War in Chechnya, is a harrowing and brutally honest account of the chaos and dehumanising horror of the first and second Chechen wars in the 1990s.   As a war correspondent, he went on to write angrily about the human toll of the Kremlin's military entanglements in Georgia, Ukraine, and Syria.  His positions did not make him popular with nationalists and pro-Kremlin politicians, and he later described being "used to abuse." Arkady Babchenko served in and reported from several of Russia's modern wars, and became a bitter critic of the Kremlin's military entanglements Credit:  Vitaliy Nosach/AP He became the focus of what he called a particular vicious campaign of "political intimidation" after he wrote on Facebook that he had "neither sympathy or pity" for dozens of members of a Russian army choir who died in an air crash en route to Syria in 2016.   Several pro-Kremlin politicians made public calls for him to be publicly punished, including by being stripped of citizenship, deported, or having his property confiscated.  "It was so personal, so scary, that I was forced to flee," he wrote after he had left Russia.  He lived in Prague and Israel before moving to Kiev last summer.  Babchenko's life was defined by his work as a war correspondent to the last.  Четыре года назад генерал Кульчицкий не взял меня на этот вертолет. Из-за перегруза. Не было места. Часа через два после этой фотографии её сбили. Погибли четырнадцать человек. А мне повезло

Unlicenced Ebola meds could soon be used in DR Congo: WHO

The World Health Organization said Tuesday it was awaiting formal approval from the Democratic Republic of Congo to send in unlicenced Ebola medication to help rein in an outbreak of the deadly virus. A "major innovation in this outbreak is the potential for use of therapeutic regimens," Peter Salama, WHO's head of emergency response, told reporters in Geneva Tuesday. Because of this, they can only be used under the protocols used for research and clinical trials, which also requires ethical reviews and informed consent from each recipient, he said.......

Can I roast a marshmallow over lava?

At more than 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, the lava oozing out of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano will easily toast a marshmallow, but that doesn't mean you should go out and start making volcanic s'mores. On Monday, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) explained on Twitter that roasting marshmallows over scorching, molten rock is not a great idea for a multitude of reasons. SEE ALSO: Hawaii's Kilauea volcano could keep erupting for months. Here's why. "Is it safe to roast marshmallows over volcanic vents?," Twitter user Jay Furr asked the USGS Volcanoes account on Monday. "Erm...we're going to have to say no, that's not safe. (Please don't try!)," the USGS said in response. "If the vent is emitting a lot of SO2 [sulfur dioxide] or H2S [hydrogen sulfide], they would taste BAD. And if you add sulfuric acid (in vog [volcanic smog], for example) to sugar, you get a pretty spectacular reaction." Erm...we're going to have to say no, that's not safe. (Please don't try!) If the vent is emitting a lot of SO2 or H2S, they would taste BAD. And if you add sulfuric acid (in vog, for example) to sugar, you get a pretty spectacular reaction. — USGS Volcanoes (@USGSVolcanoes) May 29, 2018 Just stepping on or near fresh lava flows is inherently dangerous for a variety of reasons, not least because heated, molten rock might still be present under a thin crust of deceptively-cooled and blackened rock.  Kilauea is one of the few places on Earth where people can often view lava flows from a safe distance in marked locations.  But entering active lava flow areas, or places where lava has recently flowed, is kind of stupid, at best. As national park service ranger Shyla explains, the hazards include emissions of toxic gases, unexpected explosions, flying debris (which include deadly lava bombs), and collapses of land — notably near the ocean. But even if someone were to venture near freshly laid lava and toasted a marshmallow, the sticky treat would likely be disgusting. Lava flowing down Leilani Avenue on the Big Island on May 27.Image: usgsAs the USGS noted in their tweeted reply, volcanic vents don't just spew lava, they release gases like sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, which make for a nasty coating.  Both gases are colorless, but hydrogen sulfide carries an "offensive odor," says the USGS, similar to the smell of a sewer, or farts. If the rotten egg-like smell is present, it's a good idea to leave the area.  "Exposure to 500 ppm (parts per million) can cause a human to fall unconscious in 5 minutes and die in an hour or less," said the USGS.  And if the nearby vent is emitting sulfur dioxide, it won't be a particularly pleasant experience if you're around, as the gas irritates eyes and respiratory systems. Often, sulfur dioxide emitted from Kilauea creates volcanic smog, or "vog," so the USGS half-joked that a chemical reaction might occur between the sulfur-rich vog and the sugar-rich marshmallows. A fun classroom experiment involves adding sulfuric acid to sugar, which (after stirring) creates a mass of hot, black foam. But, keep those experiments to the classroom, not an active lava field. British campaigner Andy Tsege released from prison after four years on death row in Ethiopia

A Briton who spent four years on death row in Ethiopia walked out of prison on Tuesday, freed by the regime that once labelled him a "terrorist". Andargachew Tsege, who fled to Britain in 1974, was greeted by hundreds of supporters who gathered outside his family's home in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, to celebrate the release of one of the government's most outspoken critics. Such scenes in one of Africa's most repressive regimes would have been unthinkable just a few months ago. Mr Andargachew, perhaps unable to grasp the scale of Ethiopia's rapid political thaw, seemed stunned by the reception. "I did not expect this much turn out," he said, suggesting he did not deserve  it since "four years in prison is not that much of a sacrifice." Other dissidents had indeed been incarcerated for longer, though few were captured in such dramatic circumstances. While waiting to catch a connecting flight to Eritrea in 2014, Mr Andargachew was seized by armed men in a transit lounge at an airport in Yemen. He was immediately bundled onto a flight to Addis Ababa, with Ethiopia claiming it had merely extradited one of their most wanted men. Britain protested, but Ethiopia stood firm: as one of the leaders of Ginbot 7, a group of Ethiopian exiles who had based themselves in neighbouring Eritrea, Mr Andargachew was a "traitor" and "coup plotter". In the past year, however, Ethiopia's ruling coalition has been forced to yield to domestic pressure after an ethnic and political crisis threatened to tear apart the old political order. In the past three months, the Ethiopian government has pardoned more than 10,000 political prisoners. Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary, hailed Mr Andargachew's release and the broader political significance it portended. "Recent moves by the Ethiopian Government send a positive signal that they remain serious about following through with promised reforms to increase political space," Mr Johnson said. The Foreign Secretary also insisted that Mr Andargachew's case had been "a priority" for his department, a claim that will be questioned by those who campaigned for the dissident's release, particularly his UK-based partner, Yemisrach Hailemariam. Mr Johnson was criticised for not raising Mr Andargachew's plight publicly — although he said he did in private — when he visited Addis Ababa last year, a trip in which the Foreign Secretary largely skirted over Ethiopia's human rights record. Mrs Yemisrach extended thanks to Jeremy Corbyn, who is Mr Andargachew's MP, and to Emily Thornberry, the shadow foreign secretary, for their efforts to win his freedom. But she pointedly excluded Mr Johnson.......

Weinstein's attorney claims he had 10-year consensual affair with rape accuser

Harvey Weinstein had a 10-year consensual sexual relationship with the woman he was recently arrested for raping - both before and after the alleged 2013 attack, according to his New York defense attorney Ben Brafman, who called the first degree rape charge "absurd." Brafman made the revelation on Tuesday morning following a 90-minute meeting he had in a New York judge's chambers with the Manhattan assistant district attorney prosecuting the case. Weinstein did not participate in the meeting in the judge's chambers. The judge ordered the transcript of the meeting sealed, so the substance of the arguments and the response by prosecutors remains unknown. Still, Brafman said outside of court that he was concerned about the "unprecedented" public pressure that has been brought to bear on the office of Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance to seek an indictment against the disgraced Hollywood movie mogul. Father of child in 'Spiderman' rescue was reportedly off playing 'Pokémon Go'

The story of a dramatic rescue of a child that was dangling from a Paris balcony took a depressing turn on Tuesday when it was revealed that the child's father was off playing Pokémon Go at the time of the incident . SEE ALSO: Real-life 'Spider-Man' who climbed building to save child to meet with French president The child was rescued by 22-year-old Mamoudou Gassama, an undocumented Malian migrant. In the now-famous feat, Gassama scaled several stories, earning him the "Spiderman" nickname, to save the child. But it turns out the child's father is now in very hot water over what he was doing at the time of the rescue. French prosecutor Francois Molins told a CNN affiliate that the father had gone grocery shopping, leaving the child alone and then proceeded to play Pokémon Go after leaving the shop. (The child's mother was away on a trip visiting family at the time.) The father has been charged with "failure to meet parental obligations" and could face up to two years in prison if found guilty at trial, which is currently scheduled for September. According to Molins, the father is "devastated" by what's transpired. Gassama, for his part, met with French President Emanuel Macron who said he would make Gassama a full French citizen. I also invited him to submit a naturalization request because France is built on desire and Mr Gassama's commitment clearly showed that he has that desire! A post shared by Emmanuel Macron (@emmanuelmacron) on May 28, 2018 at 2:15am PDT In an Instagram post showing him meeting Gassama on Monday, Macron said: The family of the child also showered praise on Gassama, the child's grandmother calling the rescuer a "hero."  WATCH: Presidents Trump and Macron dug a tree and somehow that became a meme. Skeleton of Roman beheaded by giant flying rock slab found at Pompeii

The skeleton of a Roman man who was decapitated by a giant slab of rock has been discovered by archeologists in Pompeii. They believe the man, aged in his thirties, was attempting to flee the eruption of Mt Vesuvius when the 300kg rock slammed into him, beheading him and killing him instantly. He had struggled to escape the doomed city because he had an infection in his leg. Archeologists found the rock sticking out of the ground at an angle, with the remains of the man protruding and intact from the chest down. The rock, which they think may have been part of a stone doorway, was hurled into the air by the force of the eruption, which devastated Pompeii in AD79. Archeologists say the man was fleeing the eruption but was impeded by a leg bone infection Credit: Pompeii archeological site The skeleton was uncovered in an area of new excavations, close to a newly-discovered alleyway of houses with balconies. Massimo Osanna, the director general of the archaeological site, called the discovery "dramatic and exceptional". "A formidable stone block (perhaps a door jamb), violently thrown by the volcanic cloud, collided with his upper body, crushing the highest part of the thorax and yet-to-be-identified head, which probably lies under the stone block," archeologists said in a statement. The experts found lesions on his tibia which indicate a serious bone infection. That "could have caused significant walking difficulties, enough to impede the man's escape at the first dramatic signs which preceded the eruption," they said. Earlier this month, archeologists made another unusual discovery – the carbonised remains of a horse which died during the eruption of Vesuvius. The remains of a Roman horse were found earlier this month Credit: Pompeii archeological site The horse was found in the remains of a large Roman villa, which tomb raiders had been excavating illegally in search of artefacts and valuables. By pumping plaster into the space where the horse was found, experts produced an accurate cast of the animal. It was the first time that a cast was made of a horse at Pompeii – the technique has previously been used for the human victims of the cataclysmic eruption. Experts believe the horse was used in military parades and ceremonies. It was found in the remains of a stable attached to the villa.......
