Dozens of mortars fired from Gaza into Israel in heaviest barrage since 2014 war

Dozens of mortars and rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel early on Tuesday morning, in the most serious such barrage since the end of the 2014 Gaza conflict.  The Israeli military said 27 projectiles were fired out of Gaza at around 7am local time. No one was injured in the barrage but one shell fell into the yard of a kindergarten.  "This was the biggest barrage since 2014," said Lt Col Jonathan Conricus, a military spokesman.  "One of the mortars fell in the yard of a kindergarten but luckily no children were hurt. This was definitely aimed at the time children were going to school and people were going to work." The Israeli military said most of the projectiles were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome missile defence system.  Immediate suspicion for the attack fell on Islamic Jihad, a smaller militant faction which operates inside Gaza and is tolerated by Hamas, the Islamist rulers of the Gaza Strip.  Three Islamic Jihad fighters were killed by Israeli forces on Saturday Credit: Abed Rahim Khatib/Anadolu Agency/Getty Images Three Islamic Jihad fighters were killed on Sunday by Israeli tank fire. Israeli forces opened fire on the group in response to a bomb planted by the Gaza border fence.  Islamic Jihad had vowed to exact revenge for the killings.  Israel has a policy of holding Hamas responsible for any attacks coming out of Gaza, regardless of which group actually did the shooting.  The Israeli military is expected to carry out a wave of airstrikes in Gaza in response to the mortars.  The barrage comes after weeks of heightened tensions in Gaza.  Israeli forces have killed more than 100 Palestinians since late March during protests at the Gaza border fence.  The majority of those killed have been unarmed although Israeli troops have faced gun and bomb attacks on the border.  Hamas and other factions have refrained from firing rockets into Israel since February but there has been a spike in shooting in recent days. On Monday night, heavy machine gun fire from Gaza hit a house in the Israeli town of Sderot. Another house in Sderot was hit by gunfire two weeks earlier.  Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, was expected to hold emergency consultations with military leaders in response to the barrage.  Emanuele Giaufret, the EU ambassador to Israel, condemned the attack as "totally unacceptable".  As kids were preparing for school this morning a barrage of rockets from Gaza fell on southern Israel. One landed outside a kindergarten. I know the resilience of communities in southern Israel but indiscriminate attacks are totally unacceptable and to be condemned unreservedly.— Emanuele Giaufret (@EGiaufretEU) May 29, 2018  ......

Following recent news reports of children lost in the system after crossing the border illegally, outrage erupted on social media in recent days after reports emerged that HHS over the past three months of 2017 lost track of 1,475 children who crossed into the United States from Mexico by themselves and were placed with sponsors.......

France grants honorary citizenship to hero 'Spider-man' migrant who scaled Paris building to save four-year old

It took less than a minute of extreme bravery for Mamoudou Gassama, a Malian migrant, to scale the façade of a Paris building and save a four-year-old boy clinging to the edge of a balcony for dear life. Barely 24 hours later, the 22-year-old's spectacular fourth-floor rescue earned him an invitation to the Elysée Palace, where President Emmanuel Macron on Monday hailed his "courage and devotion" and offered him French nationality and a job as a fireman. His feat highlights the quandary facing Paris in dealing humanely with a migrant influx that homeless charities this month warned risked ending in tragedy, after two refugees drowned in canals and a third was stabbed. France has been transfixed by video footage of the Malian's exploits, which has been viewed millions of times on social media and turned Mr Gassama into an overnight celebrity with the nickname "Spider-Man". The film shows a crowd cheering on Mr Gassama from the street as he pulls himself from balcony to balcony with his bare hands. With a neighbour in the apartment block in Paris's multi-ethnic 18th arrondissement unable to reach the boy, Mr Gassama manages to grab the four-year-old, who it appears climbed on to the balcony after being left alone by his father. The crowd goes wild. "I ran. I crossed the street to save him," he told Mr Macron at their Elysée meeting. "When I started to climb, it gave me courage to keep climbing." God "helped me" too, said Mr Gassama, who said that his legs felt like jelly once the child was safe and sound. "Thank God I saved him." French President Emmanuel Macron to grant Malian  migrant who save child French nationality Credit: AP POOL According to BFM TV, the boy had fallen from the balcony of his father's sixth floor flat to the floor below and had somehow managed to cling on until Mr Gassama came to his rescue. While "Spider-Man" was scaling the building, it transpired that child's father – who lives alone with his son – was outside playing Pokémon Go on his mobile phone. He now faces a maximum two-year prison term and €30,000 (£26,000) fine for dereliction of parental duty. In excerpts of their conversation posted on the President's Facebook page, Mr Macron said: "Bravo. You saved a child. Without you, no one knows what would have become of him. You need courage and the capability to do that.  "This is an exceptional act. We'll obviously be setting all your papers straight and if you wish it, we will start the process of naturalisation so that you can become French." The president said Mr Gassama deserved a "meaningful" job, adding: "What you have done corresponds with what firemen do. If this fits your wishes, you could join the fire brigade so that you can do [such acts] on a daily basis." Mr Gassama, who lives in a hostel for migrants in Montreuil, an eastern suburb of Paris, told Mr Macron how he tried to cross the Mediterranean in March 2014 to reach Italy after a long, arduous spell in Libya, but was caught by police and beaten. "But I wasn't discouraged," he said. After crossing at an unspecified date, he was allowed to legally stay in Italy, but decided to join his older brother, who has lived in France for decades. VIDÉO - Un homme a escaladé à mains nues la façade d'un immeuble hier après-midi dans le 18ème à #Paris pour secourir un petit garçon de 4 ans accroché à un balcon. Mr Macron said there was no contradiction between this and rewarding Mr Gassama's bravery. Meanwhile, authorities are preparing to evacuate around 2,400 migrants from makeshift encampments in Paris. There was approval across the political spectrum for Mr Gassama to be granted honorary citizenship. But Nicolas Bay, general secretary of the far-Right Front National party, only supported the move on conditi

The disease, which is common in many countries, was first detected in New Zealand at a farm in the South Island last July and some 37 properties have now tested positive for the illness. "Today's decision to eradicate is driven by the government's desire to protect the national herd from the disease and protect the base of our economy – the farming sector," Ardern said in a statement.......

During their pursuit of the two Palestinians attempting to infiltrate armed with "knives, wire cutters and combustible material", the Israeli soldiers were shot at from inside the Gaza Strip, the military said in a statement. Iran sanctions shadow falls on smaller German banks

Germany's biggest lenders have shied away from business with Iran after past penalties for breaching US sanctions, but smaller banks have leapt on opportunities afforded by the nuclear deal rejected by Donald Trump. There are just months to go until a November deadline issued by Washington after the US president abandoned a hard-fought agreement that loosened business restrictions on the Islamic Republic in exchange for Tehran giving up its pursuit of nuclear weapons. "We will continue to serve our clients," for now, said Patrizia Melfi, a director at the "international competence centre" (KCI) founded by six cooperative savings banks in the small town of Tuttlingen in southwest Germany.......

South Korean president may join Singapore summit as Donald Trump hails North's 'brilliant potential'

Moon Jae-in, South Korea's president may travel to Singapore next month for a three-way summit with the US and North Korea, amid ongoing efforts to find a deal on denuclearisation and peace on the Korean peninsula.  The trip, if it goes ahead, would likely take place around 12 June, to follow on from a bilateral meeting between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump, the US president.  "The discussions are just getting started, so we are still waiting to see how they come out, but depending on their outcome, the president could join President Trump and Chairman Kim in Singapore," a South Korean official told the Yonhap news agency.  The suggestion came as the June 12 summit, which was called off by President Trump on Thursday after Pyongyang called Vice President Mike Pence a "political dummy", appeared to be back on track again following an impromptu meeting of the North and South Korean leaders over the weekend.  "I truly believe North Korea has brilliant potential and will be a great economic and financial Nation one day. Kim Jong Un agrees with me on this. It will happen!" said Mr Trump in conciliatory tweet on Sunday.   Moon Jae-in, South Korea's president, is emerging as a mediator between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un Credit: AFP/AFP US officials, including veteran negotiator with the North, Sung Kim, now US ambassador to the Philippines, on Sunday arrived in the demilitarised zone separating the two Koreas, for talks with a senior North Korean delegation about the agenda for the Singapore summit.  Their surprise visit, at the same time as another US delegation was believed to be en route to Singapore to arrange logistics, has revived hopes that the historic summit, a first for a sitting American president and a North Korean leader, may still take place.  Following the second meeting in a month between Mr Moon and the North Korean on Saturday, the South Korean president said Kim was determined to go ahead with the landmark summit. North Korea's nuclear history: key moments "He (Kim) also expressed his intention to put an end to the history of war and confrontation through the success of the North-US summit and to co-operate for peace and prosperity," Mr Moon told reporters. In an about turn, Mr Trump said at the weekend that the date of June 12 was still under consideration, although his aides have expressed scepticism about the logistics.  North Korea analysts are also doubtful that the summit could produce a substantive outcome, given the gulf that remains between Pyongyang and Washington's expectations on denuclearisation.  Mr Moon said that Kim was still committed to the "complete denuclearisation" of the Korean peninsula but would not be drawn on its exact definition.   Experts have suggested that Kim will expect mutual disarmament and never agree to unilaterally give up his nuclear weapons.  ......

Nicaragua protests erode pillars of support for Ortega

By Delphine Schrank MANAGUA (Reuters) - A thuggish response to weeks of protests has eroded carefully constructed pillars of support in the Church, military and business world for Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, emboldening calls for the ouster of the former Marxist guerrilla who has dominated politics for decades. More than a month after changes to the Central American nation's social security system triggered student-led protests, indignation at a brutal crackdown in which at least 77 people have been killed and over 800 wounded has morphed into a daily challenge to Ortega's rule. Harry and Meghan to visit Canada on honeymoon, reports suggest

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are to spend their honeymoon at the Royal family's favourite Canadian cabin, according to US reports.  Harry and Meghan will travel to the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge in Alberta, Canada, for their first holiday as a married couple, TMZ reported.  However, a spokeswoman for the lodge said they were "not currently booked for a stay".  Angela Moore, regional director of public relations, said: "We are declining further comment at this time, as our top priority is always the safety and privacy of all of our guests. We appreciate your understanding." The lodge they were rumoured to be staying in is the 6,000 square foot Outlook Cabin, which has previously hosted the Queen and Prince Philip in 2005 as well as the Queen Mother, who visited in 1939 with King George VI. The £2,000-a-night lodge comes with a conservatory and veranda, private parking, a terrace with a barbecue, six bedrooms and six bathrooms.  It was rebuilt following the exact floorplan of the original, after being destroyed in a fire in 2000. The resort's brochure says the cabin "exudes the elegance and grandeur that has welcomed King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939 as well as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 2005." Prince Harry and Meghan Markle: The story of their relationship, in pictures The cabin is nicknamed "the Royal retreat" and can cost from around £2,000 up to around £5,000 a night, according to online booking websites.  It adds: "Supreme comfort is present in every detail of the comfortable bedrooms, enclosed verandas and two majestic stone fireplaces that warms both the dining room and great room - the perfect place to entertain family & friends or celebrate a special occasion." There had previously been suggestions that the couple would opt for an African destination for their honeymoon, given both Harry and Meghan's interest and experience in charity work on the continent.  The entrance to the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Credit: George Rose /Getty Images North America  They took a romantic holiday in Botswana shortly after they first met in the summer of 2016, before visiting southern Africa again the following year.  However, the Duchess has a longstanding connection with Canada, having lived in Toronto for several years while filming the series Suits.  A spokesman for the Royals declined to comment. ......

Rudy Giuliani admits 'Spygate' is Trump PR tactic against Robert Mueller

Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani said on Sunday that his repeated imputations of a supposed scandal at the heart of the Robert Mueller investigation – which Donald Trump calls "Spygate" – amounted to a tactic to sway public opinion and limit the risk of the president being impeached. "Of course we have to do it to defend the president," Trump's lawyer told CNN State of the Union host Dana Bash, who accused him of being part of a campaign to undermine the Mueller investigation. Trump has repeatedly called the special counsel's work a "witch hunt", despite its producing five guilty pleas, including by three former Trump aides, and evidence of Russian tampering in US elections.......

NATO to focus on deterrence, 'managing' Russia ties at summit

NATO said Monday it will focus on five key areas from deterrence to modernisation and EU relations at its July summit, with measures to "manage" ties with an increasingly assertive Russia high on the agenda. Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told lawmakers at the spring session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Warsaw that the summit will also focus on projecting stability in border regions -- particularly in the south -- as well as burden-sharing. Building on the alliance's 2016 decision to deploy battle groups on its eastern flank facing Russia, Stoltenberg said he expected leaders at the July 11-12 summit in Brussels to "make decisions on reinforcement, readiness and military mobility" of forces.......

Israel sees an opportunity to drive a wedge between Iran and Russia in Syria

Israel is increasingly optimistic that it may be coming close to its longheld goal of driving a wedge between Russia and Iran in Syria, a senior Israeli official said today.  Chagai Tzuriel, director general of the Israeli intelligence ministry, said he believed Russia was growing frustrated with Iran's presence in Syria and was worried that fighting between Israel and Iran would threaten Moscow's interests.  "My assessment is that the Russians are interested in stabilising their achievements in Syria," Mr Tzuriel said. "I think they understand that if the Iranians continue on the present course this will lead to escalation and will blow their plans out of the water." Israel's has long said it would not allow Iran to gain a permanent military foothold in Syria. Israeli forces have carried out increasingly intense strikes against Iranian targets in Syria in recent weeks and in the process have inflicted serious damage on the Assad regime's air defences.  Mr Tzuriel said he believed that the Israeli strikes - combined with America's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement and economic discontent within Iran - were fueling tensions between Iran and its Russian and Syrian allies.   "I think this is a moment pregnant with opportunity. My assessment is that the situation we're in is an opportune moment to try to change fundamentally the strategic situation," he said.  Israel hopes that Vladimir Putin (left) and Bashar al-Assad will lose patience with Iran  Credit: MIKHAIL KLIMENTYEV/AFP/Getty Images Mr Tzuriel spoke as unconfirmed reports emerged that the Syrian regime's air force was trying to expel Iranian troops from its airbases because they were such a frequent target of Israeli attacks.  Zaman Al Wasl, a Syrian opposition media outlet, said Syrian air force commanders were trying to shut Iranian troops and Hizbollah fighters out of their air bases to try to shield the sites from Israeli strikes.  Potential cracks in the Russian-Iranian relationship have become increasingly visible in recent weeks.  Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, said in mid-May that all foreign forces would leave Syria once the Assad regime was fully in control of the country. The comments appeared to anger Iran. An Iranian foreign ministry spokesman said in response: "No one can make Iran do things; Iran has its own independent policies." Sergei Lavrov, Russia's foreign minister, also said Monday that only Syrian regime forces should be stationed on Syria's southern border - implying that neither Iran nor Hizbollah should be allowed near the Israeli border. The comment appeared to be another small victory for Israel, which has long urged Russia in rein in Iran's presence all across Syria but especially in the south near the Israeli border.  Syrian regime forces have captured significant territory from rebel forces in recent months Credit: LOUAI BESHARA/AFP/Getty Images Michael Horowitz, a senior analyst at the Le Beck geopolitical consultancy, said Israel had been trying for a long time to warn Russia about the dangers of Iran's presence in Syria but had only recently gained traction.    "The Israeli strategy was always to convince Russia that they had a lot to lose if they didn't do anything about Iran. Until a few weeks ago, I would have told you they were doing that in vain and that Russia didn't understand and didn't care. But it's changed because the escalatory strategy of Israeli strikes in Syria is really threatening to trigger conflict," he said.  Mr Horowitz cautioned that the recent shift did not mean Israel would necessarily achieve its goal of forcing Iran out of Syria. "This doesn't mean Israel has won. But it means the dynamics are changing for the first time."  Even if Russia and the Syrian regime do believe that Iran's presence is coming at too high a price, it is not clear how they could force Iranian troops and their Shia militias allies out of Syria.  Iran has invested heavily in propping up the Assad regime during years of fight

Malaysia axes project to build high-speed rail link with Singapore

By Liz Lee and John Geddie KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia is cancelling a project to build a high-speed rail link between its capital, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore, and will talk with its southern neighbor about any compensation Malaysia has to pay, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Monday. Mahathir, the 92-year-old who triumphed in a general election this month, has made it a priority to cut the national debt and pledged to review big projects agreed by his predecessor that he says are expensive and have no financial benefit. "It is a final decision, but it will take time because we have an agreement with Singapore," Mahathir told a news conference referring to his scrapping of the project, valued by analysts at about $17 billion.......

France grants honorary citizenship to hero 'spiderman' migrant who scaled Paris building to save four-year old

A Malian migrant hailed a national hero for scaling a building to save a four-year old dangling from a fourth-floor balcony in Paris is to be granted French nationality and given a job as a fireman. A video of Mamoudou Gassama's spectacular rescue went viral on social media and has been viewed millions of times. With a crowd below cheering him on from the street, the migrant  pulled himself from balcony to balcony at risk of life and limb, and managed to grab the four-year-old as a neighbour unsuccessfully tried to reach the boy from the nearest flat. President Emmanuel Macron invited Mr Gassama to the Elysee Palace on Monday morning to personally thank him. During their filmed conversation, Mr Gassama said that he was trembling like a leaf after his courageous act. Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo also lauded the 22-year-old's heroism, and said she had called him to thank him in person. She hailed him as the "Spiderman of the 18th", a reference to the Paris district where the rescue took place. "Congratulations to Mamoudou Gassama for his act of bravery that saved the life of a child," Ms Hidalgo tweeted. Hinting that he could expect a fast track to residency, government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux tweeted: "This huge act of bravery, faithful to the values of solidarity of our Republic, must open the doors to our national community." A petition has been launched online. Rights group SOS Racisme said: "Mamoudou Gassama serves as a useful reminder to us that people without papers are human beings with…great bravery that many have shown in their perilous journey to Europe - bravery that they often continue to display here." The drama took place on Saturday evening on a street in the north of the French capital. Mr Gassama told journalists he had been in the vicinity when he saw a crowd gathered in front of the building. "I saw lots of people shouting and cars beeping. I saw that the child was going to fall from the balcony.  I did it because it was a child,"BFM TV quoted him as saying. "I climbed... Thank God I saved him." He added: "When I got the child, he was crying. I asked him where his mother was. He replied that she was at a party."  Cet homme aussi téméraire que courageux a sauvé la vie d'un enfant au péril de la sienne. The Parisian fire service said crews had arrived to find the child had already been rescued. "Luckily, there was someone who was physically fit and who had the courage to go and get the child," a spokesman told AFP news agency. Local authorities quoted by French media said the child's parents were not at home at the time. The mother was not in Paris at the time, it is believed. The father has been questioned by police on suspicion of leaving his child unattended, judicial sources say.  He faces charges of "dereliction of parental duty", a crime that carries a maximum two-year prison term. The child has been placed into care for the time being. This is not the first time an undocumented migrant has been hailed a hero in France. Lassa

Famous Ivan the Terrible painting 'badly damaged' after vandal attacks Moscow gallery

A vandal enraged by what he claimed is a misleading portrayal of Ivan the Terrible has badly damaged one of the most iconic paintings of the infamous Tsar.  The attacker, who has not been named, used a metal pole to break the glass protecting Ilya Repin's Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan on November 16th, 1581, just before closing time at Moscow's Treyakov gallery on Friday.  "The painting is badly damaged, the canvas is ripped in three places in the central part.... The falling glass also damaged the frame," the gallery said in a statement.  "Luckily, the most valuable images, those of the faces and hands of the tsar and prince were not damaged," the statement said. A 37-year old man from the town of Voronezh was arrested at the scene, police said in a statement.  The suspect told officers that he had acted because of what he called the "falsehood of the historical facts depicted on the canvas." Ilya Repin was one of the greatest Russian artists of the 19th century Credit: GL Archive / Alamy Stock Photo "I came to see the painting. I wanted to leave, but then dropped into the buffet and drank 100 grams of vodka. I don't drink vodka, and became overwhelmed by something," he said in a video released by police.   Repin's painting, which was completed in 1885, depicts the moment of deranged grief when the aging Ivan the Terrible realizes he has murdered his son and heir apparent in a rage.  It is considered one of Repin's most emotionally intense paintings, and it has been said that Ivan the Terrible's eyes can drive viewers mad.  Tsar Alexander III disliked the painting so much he banned its display for several months after it was unveiled - making it the first painting subject to censorship in Russia. The painting after the 1913 knife attack Credit: Wikipedia Commons In 1913 a mentally ill man called Abram Balashov cut it with a knife in three places, shouting "enough death, enough blood!" Gregory Khruslov, the curator responsible for the painting, threw himself under a train when he heard about it.   Repin, who is widely considered the greatest Russian painter of the 19th century, was still alive to help restore the painting after that attack.  The painting has been held by the Tretyakov since the 19th century. In 2011 Repin's A Parisian Cafe fetched  £4.5 million at auction.  Ivan the Terrible ruled Russia from 1547 to 1584.  Putin last year defending Ivan the Terrible (not that bad, look at all the other leaders back then!) "Take the famous legend about how [in English, here] Ivan the Terrible, Ivan Grozny, killed his son. That's known yet, whether he killed his son or not"https://t.co/Ko0tyZZSG2— Scott Rose (@rprose) May 26, 2018 Most sources agree he killed his son Ivan in a quarrel over the Tsar's handling of a war with Poland and his treatment of the Tsarevich's wife, who had miscarried after being beaten by her father-in-law.  But some Russian nationalists argue that his reputation for brutality, including the story that he murdered Ivan, is actually a product of Western propaganda.  Vladimir Putin said last year that "its is not known yet" whether Ivan the Terrible killed his son, and that the whole story may have been made up by envoys from the Vatican who wanted to convert Russia from Orthodoxy to Catholicism.  In 2013, a nationalist group called Holy Rus sent an open letter the Tretyakov's director and Russia's minister of culture demanding Repin's painting be removed on the grounds that there was no evidence for the murder and that the painting was thus "a libel against the Russian people."  In October 2016 the Russian town of Oryol courted controversy by erecting the first public statue of Ivan the Terrible. ......
