Dodgers battle past Giants to snap 11-game slide, clinch playoff spot

SAN FRANCISCO -- Mired in an 11-game losing streak, Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers felt the magnitude of this regular-season game more than most. Understandably so, the way September has gone so far. Kershaw pitched the Dodgers to their first win in nearly two weeks, helping them clinch a playoff berth by finally beating the San Francisco Giants 5-3 on Tuesday night to snap the club's longest losing streak since moving to the West Coast in 1958. "We needed it," manager Dave Roberts said of his team, which had lost 16 of 17 games entering the day. "We were scratching and clawing to get that W." The Dodgers' drought was their worst in 25 years, topping 10-game skids in Los Angeles during the 1961 and 1992 seasons. The 1944 Brooklyn team lost 16 straight games. With Tuesday's win, the Dodgers avoided matching the longest losing streak in MLB history by a team that won 90 or more games that season, according to ESPN Stats &.........

USC's Daniel Imatorbhebhe out indefinitely due to ailing hip

LOS ANGELES -- USC?tight end Daniel Imatorbhebhe could miss an extended period of time because of a nagging hip injury. Trojans coach Clay Helton said Tuesday night that the redshirt sophomore, who was expected to be one of USC's top offensive players this season, will be "shut down" until his injury, which forced him to miss last week's 42-24 win over Stanford, has completely healed. As for how long that will take, Helton isn't sure. "I really don't have a crystal ball with this one," Helton said. "It's a strange injury ... he's so skilled and has to change direction, both blocking and running routes. It just doesn't feel right, so we finally just decided to make the assessment to shut him down until he's 100 percent. "He's going to rehab, whether that takes one, two weeks, four weeks, a season, I don't know." Helton said that Imatorbhebhe has undergone an MRI "several times" and doctors have concluded that his injury is a.........

Sources: Russell Westbrook inks 10-year extension with Jordan Brand

Russell Westbrook, the NBA's reigning Most Valuable Player, will look to continue to establish himself as one of the league's top global superstars, inking a 10-year extension with Nike's Jordan Brand that will be the most lucrative total endorsement deal for a Jordan athlete to date, according to industry sources. After first signing a five-year endorsement deal in 2013, Westbrook has been positioned as the face of the brand and the annual Air Jordan model each subsequent season. During that stretch, he also elevated his game yearly as the franchise point guard of the Oklahoma City Thunder. The new shoe deal extension, negotiated by the Wasserman agency and Westbrook's longtime agent, Thad Foucher, is in advance of the initial deal's expiration next fall. The increased pay rate will also retroactively apply to his 2016-17 MVP season, according to sources. Westbrook wore Nike sneakers during his first four years in the NBA, before the company aligned him.........

Murray State's Bishop Woods marries longtime girlfriend on field after practice

When Murray State defensive lineman Bishop Woods and his fianc?e, Caitlin Myers, woke up Tuesday morning, they did not anticipate ending the day as husband and wife. But there they were, several hours later, at midfield of Roy Stewart Stadium exchanging "I dos." Woods and Myers, who have been a couple since 2014 and welcomed a son, Benjamin, into the world four months ago, were tired of waiting. During the day, Woods learned that offensive line coach Brian Hamilton was an ordained minister and asked him if he would be willing to conduct a ceremony. "When?" Hamilton asked. "Today?" Woods replied. "Sure, why not," Hamilton said.? So Woods called Myers and told her the good news: He found someone who could marry them. They didn't have to make the one-hour drive to the courthouse and could have a ceremony in front of their friends. She was in. They rehearsed before practice and when it was over, they had a wedding. .........

Kevin Durant's Nike KD 10 Finals shoes reminder of the good and bad of 2016-17

Golden State Warriors?All-Star Kevin Durant has been making statements with his apparel all summer, and his Nike KD 10 Finals shoes, released Tuesday, keep up the conversation. Last month, Durant released a new color for his KD 10s surrounded by red velvet cupcakes, a reference to the moniker given him by former teammate Russell Westbrook. The new shoes also offer a message to Durant's critics. The insoles feature a series of critiques and names directed at him since he left the Oklahoma City Thunder to join the Warriors in July 2016. Lame. Doesn't Care About Fans. He's Changed. Quitter. Weak. Snake. Soft. Arrogant. Choked. Pathetic. Loser. Bandwagon. Traitor. Cheater. Overlaid on the list on one insole, in big, bright yellow font, it says:? 16-1 2017 champs On the other insole, overlaid on the critical words, are Durant's stats for each of the five games in the.........

Jon Jones' 'B' sample confirms failed drug test from UFC 214

The "B" sample of UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones' failed drug test from July 28 in Anaheim has confirmed the presence of a banned substance. Multiple sources informed ESPN of the development on Tuesday. Last month, the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) informed Jones he'd tested positive for Turinabol, an anabolic steroid, on July 28. Jones has been notified of the "B" sample's confirmation, per sources. Jones (23-1), who reclaimed his UFC title by knocking out Daniel Cormier at UFC 214, has denied knowingly taking a banned substance. His team is currently investigating how the steroid entered his system. It is normal for an athlete to request the results of a "B" sample under these circumstances. It is rare, however, that a "B" sample negates a positive test. Jones' investigation into the possibility of tainted supplements is most important to his defense at this time. The result of Jones' win against Cormier is.........

USC says 4-0 mark vs. Texas is correct as NCAA voided Trojans' participation in 2005 season

USC?and Texas?will play this week for the first time since the Vince Young-led Longhorns beat the Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart-led Trojans 41-38 in the Rose Bowl to win the BCS national championship following the 2005 season. It was one of the most memorable college football games in history. That's why USC's official game notes caused a stir this week: They list the Trojans as 4-0 all time against Texas, while acknowledging one loss -- the Rose Bowl -- was vacated due to NCAA penalty. In 2010, the NCAA announced it found USC committed what it referred to as "agent and amateurism violations" involving Bush, and part of the penalty for the football program would include the "vacation of regular and postseason wins" from the 2005 season. The loss to Texas, of course, does not fit that criteria. However, in 2010, USC was instructed by Jim Wright, then the NCAA director of statistics, not to include participation in any games.........

"This is about bringing our city and our community together. This is about getting back to normal operations. Jacksonville was on the way up before this and continues to be on the way up." Two-time NBA All-Star Stephon Marbury hopes to retire from basketball as an NBA player this upcoming season, he said on social media Tuesday. Marbury posted his intentions on Instagram, saying: "Yes, it's true. An NBA comeback is coming." Once the CBA season is over, which could be as early as March, the 40-year-old would like to return to the NBA after a long hiatus and retire from playing in the league. Steelers' Stephon Tuitt could return to lineup as early as Sunday's game

PITTSBURGH --? Steelers defensive end Stephon Tuitt avoided major damage to his biceps and can return to the lineup as early as Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. "We'll leave the light on," coach Mike Tomlin said about Tuitt's availability. Tomlin said the team is fortunate the injury wasn't worse. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday night the team feared a biceps tear, but that ultimately an MRI would reveal the injury's severity. Tuitt on Monday privately told some teammates he got good news from that MRI. Defensive end Cam Heyward said the Steelers' defensive line was "breathing a sigh of relief" that the injury wasn't season-ending. Tuitt, who signed a six-year, $61 million extension Saturday, had a quarterback pressure and a tackle for a loss before leaving in the first quarter of Pittsburgh's 21-18 win over the Cleveland Browns. The Warriors will sport Rakuten's genuine logo with red and black on their white jerseys and a white version of the logo on the blue-and-slate jerseys. Rakuten, which owns cash-back site Ebates, messaging app Viber and ebook brand Kobo, has ratcheted up its sponsorship spend of late. In July, its name started appearing on FC Barcelona's kit in a deal worth $235 million over four years. "We love sports," Rakuten founder and CEO Hiroshi Mikitani told ESPN. High School Quarterback's Tragic Death Highlights Silent Danger of an Enlarged Spleen

A spleen can become enlarged for many reasons, including genetic diseases, William Katkov, MD, a gastroenterologist at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif., tells Yahoo Health. Here's why that's a problem: A person may feel better and resume their normal activities, but their enlarged spleen is more susceptible to rupturing and may no longer be protected by their ribcage, leaving it incredibly vulnerable to injury. "An enlarged spleen is at an increased risk for rupture or injury in the setting of normal trauma, like a football game, diving into a pool, or minor car accident," Katkov says. While an enlarged spleen can be asymptomatic, Katkov says a person can feel uncomfortable or have a feeling of fullness in their upper abdomen on the left side.......

Sources: Tony Allen agrees to one-year, $2.3 million deal with Pelicans

Tony Allen has agreed to a one-year, $2.3 million deal with the New Orleans Pelicans, sources told ESPN. Allen, 35, adds some much-needed depth to the Pelicans wing position in the wake of Soloman Hill's hamstring injury. The 13-year veteran is regarded as one of the best wing defenders in the league. He's coming off making the NBA All-Defensive Team for the sixth time in seven seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies, with whom he was hugely popular for his hard-nosed play that earned him the nickname "Grindfather." New Orleans, which is subject to a hard salary cap this season, created room to add Allen by trading Quincy Pondexter to the Chicago Bulls earlier this month. Allen averaged 9.1 points and 5.5 rebounds in 71 games for the Grizzlies last season. The Vertical first reported the agreement. ......

Hue Jackson calls out Kenny Britt for key drop in loss to Steelers

BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns cannot afford to have Kenny Britt drop perfectly thrown passes in the open field. That's the message from coach Hue Jackson, who was blunt in his assessment of Britt's painful drop in the fourth quarter of the season-opening loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, calling it "inexcusable." "Obviously, Kenny dropped the ball in the middle of the field, and I know that is what we all are talking about," Jackson said the day after the Browns' 21-18 loss. "I have seen players do that before, and we all have. I have had some of the great ones in this league drop balls. "But we can't do that to a young quarterback because he needs guys to make as many plays for him as they can in this situation. I think Kenny gets that. He knows that is inexcusable. He has to make that play for the quarterback." Britt's drop came on second-and-19 with the Browns trailing 21-10. Rookie DeShone Kizer had been.........

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --? Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Allen Robinson will miss the remainder of the 2017 season after tearing his left ACL in Sunday's victory over the Houston Texans. Robinson will have surgery in the coming weeks, coach Doug Marrone said Monday afternoon. Robinson was hurt on the third play of Sunday's game after he caught a 17-yard pass from Blake Bortles on third-and-2 to convert a first down. The Jaguars' medical staff attended to him before he walked off the field to the locker room.
