White House says Donald Trump's Charlottesville statement included condemnation of 'white supremacists and KKK'

The White House moved to deflect criticism of Donald Trump on Sunday, saying an earlier statement condemning "violence, bigotry and hatred" included "white supremacists, KKK, neo-Nazi and all extremist groups'. The president had come under intense pressure over his handling of violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a 32-year-old woman was killed on Saturday when a car crashed into a crowd of anti-racist counter-protesters. They were rallying against a far-Right crowd which had gathered in protest at city plans to remove a statue of a Civil War Confederate general. Mr Trump initially condemned violence on all sides, attracting accusations that he was protecting alt-Right elements that supported his election campaign. Horrifying moment car ploughs into people at rally in Virginia 01:04 On Sunday morning, a White House spokesman said: "The president said very strongly in his statement yesterday that he condemns all forms of violence, bigotry, and hatred, and of course that includes white supremacists, KKK, neo-Nazi, and all extremist groups. "He called for national unity and bringing all Americans together. Senior White House figures and the local mayor characterised the fatal incident as a terrorist attack. Earlier President Trump's national security adviser said the violence in Charlottesville "meets the definition of terrorism." H.R. McMaster told ABC's "This Week" that "anytime that you commit an attack against people to incite fear, it is terrorism." ......

Too many jellyfish in the sea? Blame wind farms and gas platforms

If you are noticing more jellyfish in the sea on your holiday this summer, the blame may lie just over the horizon. Scientists have discovered that offshore wind farms and oil and gas platforms inadvertently provide an ideal habitat in which the gelatinous creatures can thrive. Until now, the explosion in jellyfish numbers in oceans around the world has been largely blamed on over-fishing, which wipes out their natural predators, global warming and nutrient run-off. But now it seems that man-made structures offer an enticing home for polyps – the tiny organisms which eventually grow into jellyfish. "They preferably attach to downward-facing solid surfaces and since the availability of these is scarce in nature, they can be predominantly found on man-made structures," the team of Slovenian and Portuguese scientists report. The phenomenon is particularly pronounced in the Adriatic, where populations of a species called moon jellyfish have boomed in recent years. Moon jellyfish – which do not have a strong enough sting to harm humans - were first detected in the Adriatic in the 1830s but their presence was a rarity. These days, huge blooms of the species appear every year. A few jellyfish are highly dangerous - even fatal - if they sting humans, including this irukandji jellyfish from Australia. Credit: AP The researchers believe the explosion in numbers is closely related to the increased number of oil and gas platforms in the Adriatic – from just a handful in 1970 to around 150 now. In a report published in Environmental Research Letters, they used computer simulations to recreate the dynamics of ocean currents and the life-cycle of moon jellyfish. The results suggested a direct correlation between big jellyfish numbers and man-made structures such as energy platforms and wind farms. The structures "enable the formation of new populations in formerly unpopulated open waters," the scientists found after a five-year study. Scattered across the Adriatic in deep, open water, they enable isolated populations of jellies to find each other and breed. The profusion of jellyfish was "an aspect that is usually overlooked when evaluating the ecological impact of existing and future wind farms, oil and gas platforms," the scientists said. Too many jellyfish in the sea not only signal the deterioration of marine ecosystems; they also clog the intake pipes of shore-based power stations and desalination plants, weigh down fishing nets and – in the case of some stinging species – present a danger to humans. The research has implications for British waters, where hundreds of offshore turbines are under construction or planned. Last year, for the first time, wind farms in the UK generated more electricity than coal-powered plants. Across Europe, the power-generating capacity of offshore wind installations more than doubled in three years, from 2012 to 2015. "With the recent push towards renewable energy, the numbers (of wind farms) have skyrocketed, and that is just a fraction of what to expect in the future," the scientists said. With more wind farms and gas platforms planned, the boom in jellyfish numbers will only continue. What is good for jellyfish is also good for other species of marine life, however. A Dutch study found that offshore wind turbines provide a sanctuary in the open ocean for creatures such as crabs, mussels and anemones. The 2011 study found that wind farms also had a much lower impact than previously thought on sea birds such as cormorants and gannets, contradicting fears that the whirring rotor blades of turbines could prove fatal to bird life. "It turns out that a wind farm provides a new natural habitat for organisms living on the sea bed such as mussels, anemones and crabs, thereby contributing to increased biodiversity," said Prof Han Lindeboom from Wageningen University. "It provides an oasis of calm in a relatively busy coastal area." There could be unexpected benefits to the burgeoning numbers of jellyfish – scie

Man charged with murder following car ramming incident as violence erupts at white supremacist rally in Virginia

At least three people have been killed and and dozens injured after violence erupted at a far right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. One of those killed, a 32-year-old woman, died after a car ploughed into counter protesters as she was crossing the street. The Telegraph saw injured people lying in the road moments after the silver saloon car sped into the crowd. Col. Martin Kumer, the superintendent of the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, confirmed that an Ohio man, James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Maumee, had been arrested and charged with second-degree murder, three counts of malicious wounding and failing to stop at the scene of an accident that resulted in a death. However the authorities declined to say publicly that Mr. Fields was the driver of the car the plowed into the crowd Deepest condolences to the families & fellow officers of the VA State Police who died today. You're all among the best this nation produces.— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 12, 2017 The death toll is understood to include two Virginia State Police officers who were killed when their helicopter crashed near Charlottesville. They were later named as Lt. H. Jay Cullen, 48, and Trooper Berke M.M. Bates, who would have turned 41 on Sunday. James Alex Fields Jr., 20, is seen in a mugshot released by Charlottesville, Virginia police department Credit: Police handout/Reuters Police said 19 people were injured in the car ramming incident and 15 in other violent incidents. The Department of Justice and FBI have opened a civil rights investigation. In addition to Mr Fields, three other people have been arrested. The arrests followed a day in which the quiet university town erupted in violence with armed neo-Nazis and white supremacists fighting police and counter-protestors. Riot police used tear gas and armoured vehicles during what was described by civil rights groups as America's "largest hate gathering in decades". The city's mayor Mike Signer said: "I am heartbroken that a life has been lost here. I urge all people of good will - go home. A car hits protesters in Charlottesville. "I'm not going to make any bones about it. I place the blame for a lot of what you're seeing in American today right at the doorstep of the White House and the people around the president." A state of emergency was declared and hundreds of far-right protesters left the city's Emancipation Park as police used megaphones to declare their gathering an "unlawful assembly". Right wing blogger Jason Kessler, who organised the event, and Richard Spencer, a prominent "alt-right" activist who was due to speak, were evacuated with security and encouraged followers to leave peacefully. Clashes in Charlottesville during a protest against the removal of the Robert E. Lee monument Credit: Anadolu Agency/ Anadolu The extremists had descended on the quiet southern city of 47,000 people for a "Unite the Right" rally but the situation quickly turned violent when they were confronted by activists from the anti-fascist movement known as Antifa. President Donald Trump denounced the violence, saying on Twitter: "We ALL must be united & condemn all that hate stands for. There is no place for this kind of violence in America. Lets come together as one!" Speaking to reporters at his New Jersey golf course, Mr Trump condemned "this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides" which he called "very, very sad". He said: "It's been going on for a long time in our country. Not Donald Trump, not Barack Obama. It's been going on for a long, long time. It has no place in America. "We want to get the situation straightened out in Charlottesville and we want to study it, and we want to see what we're doing wrong as a country where things like this can happen." He added: "We have to respect each other. Ideally, we have to love each other. We have to heal the wounds of our country." Mr Trump declined to answer shouted questions about white nationalists who had su

A supersecret sonic weapon being used to attack diplomats in a foreign country may sound like the start of a sci-fi novel, but that's exactly what several U.S. diplomats in Cuba may have been exposed to, the U.S. State Department recently announced. The physical symptoms, which the State Department would not confirm, but which some news reports have suggested included hearing loss, got so bad that some of these officials had to be recalled from their duties in Havana. "Some U.S. government personnel who were working at our embassy in Havana, Cuba, on official duties — so they were there working on behalf of the U.S. embassy there — they've reported some incidents which have caused a variety of physical symptoms," Heather Nauert, a spokeswoman for the State Department, said in a news briefing Aug. 9.......

Sixty children die in Indian hospital amid row over oxygen supplies

Sixty children have died at a hospital in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh this week, prompting local media to blame the fatalities on a lack of oxygen supplies. The BRD Medical College specified that 34 were babies who died at the neo-natal intensive care unit, while 12 died because of encephalitis. The rest died of other unspecified causes. Local media reports have said some of the deaths were caused due to an oxygen shortage after a private supplier withdrew its equipment over unpaid hospital dues. BRD Medical Chief Medical Superintendent Dr R.S. Shukla denied the deaths had been caused by a lack of oxygen supplies when asked by Reuters. The hospital, in a statement, said there had been a "drop in pressure in the supply of liquid oxygen" on Thursday, but added cylinders were procured from various other suppliers. It did not specify whether that had resulted in any deaths. The breakdown of the death toll provided by the hospital showed a spike on Thursday, with 23 fatalities, including 14 babies at its neo-natal unit. Family members care for children undergoing treatment at the Baba Raghav Das Hospital Credit: EPA The Uttar Pradesh and federal governments are investigating the matter, officials said. A tweet from the Prime Minister's office said Narendra Modi was constantly monitoring the situation. The deaths have sparked a political firestorm as opposition politicians sought to pin the blame on Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party, which rules the state. The hospital is located in Gorakhpur district, which is represented by Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, who was appointed to head the state this year. "The current government is responsible for the deaths of children in Gorakhpur due to the lack of oxygen. Strict action should be taken," tweeted former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. State government officials in TV appearances chastised opposition leaders for seeking to politicize the issue. Outbreaks of encephalitis are common every year in India, claiming hundreds of lives, especially during the monsoon season. The disease is most often caused by contaminated food or water, mosquito bites, or through breathing in respiratory droplets from an infected person. India spends about one percent of its GDP on public health, among the lowest in the world. Successive governments have faced criticism for not reforming the overburdened public health system which is still plagued with shortage of doctors and dilapidated infrastructure. Modi's government has in recent years increased health spending and vowed to make healthcare more affordable.......

Inventor charged over mystery disappearance of journalist from his sunken submarine

A Danish submarine inventor has been charged over the disappearance of a Swedish journalist who was with him on his vessel before it mysteriously sank near Copenhagen. Peter Madsen, a 46-year-old entrepreneur, had invited Kim Wall, a 30-year-old freelance journalist, to join him on what was supposed to be a short voyage aboard his private submarine Nautilus. When the submarine did not return as scheduled on Friday morning, Miss Wall's boyfriend raised the alarm and a major naval search was launched to find the vessel. Rescuers found Mr Madsen standing in the tower of the sunken Nautilus but there was no sign of Miss Wall. Kim Wall disappeared after boarding the submarine with Mr Madsen The inventor said he had dropped her on an island in Copenhagen's harbour on Thursday evening but her family said she had disappeared. Danish police later arrested Mr Madsen on suspicion of her death. He appeared in court on Saturday, where prosecutors accused him of killing Miss Wall "in an unknown way and in an unknown place" sometime after 5pm on Thursday. Mr Madsen denies the charges and smiled in the courtroom as he talked with his defence lawyer. Nautilus, believed to be the world's largest privately owned submarine, is lying in shallow waters of Denmark's east coast but police divers have not yet been able to enter it. The Nautilus Credit: OUTANDERS VALDSTED/AFP/Getty Images Danish police suspect that Mr Madsen may have deliberately sank the Nautilus to conceal evidence of Miss Wall's death, according to Ekstra Bladet, a Danish newspaper The journalist was born in Sweden and studied at the London School of Economics, Columbia University in New York and the Sorbonne in Paris. She divided her time between New York and Beijing and had written for the New York Times, Time Magazine and the Guardian. Mr Madsen appeared calm during an interview with Danish television shortly after the submarine sank, saying: "I am fine, but sad because Nautilus went down." He said there had been a problem with a ballast tank that "turned into a major issue". Nautilus, named after the ship from the classic science fiction novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, was built by Mr Madsen after raising $200,000 (£154,000) online. ......

Three dead and 35 injured as white supremacists and neo-Nazis bring chaos to Virginia

At least three people have been killed and more than 35 people injured after violence erupted at a far right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. One of those killed, a 32-year-old woman, died after a car ploughed into counter protesters as she was crossing the street. The death toll also appeared two include two people who died when a police helicopter crashed near Charlottesville. It was not immediately confirmed whether they were police officers. The Telegraph saw injured people lying in the road moments after the silver sedan sped into the crowd, and witnesses said the driver did so intentionally "trying to kill people". Police later said they had arrested the driver of the car that ploughed into the crowd. It came as the quiet university town erupted in violence with armed neo-Nazis and white supremacists fighting police and counter-protestors. We have to heal the wounds of our country." Mr Trump declined to answer shouted questions about white nationalists who had supported him. Far-right activists wore Nazi symbols and shouted "blood and soil" - a slogan of the Third Reich - as they marched into the city while others carried flags of the Confederacy or imitation viking shields. Other militia members carried assault rifles and wore military-style body armour. A woman is received first-aid after a car accident ran into a crowd of protesters in Charlottesville. Credit: AFP The white supremacists exchanged blows with Left-wing demonstrators and in several cases people were hit with pepper spray. Police in riot gear were unable to calm the situation as the two sides fought in the streets. Early in the afternoon a car ploughed into anti-fascist counter-protesters marching downtown at the junction of 4th and Water Streets. Arriving on the scene shortly afterwards, The Sunday Telegraph saw several people lying in the street injured, including a woman with a bloody head wound, and others screa

The FCC is actively working against consumers

The Federal Communications Commission is arguably the federal government's least-loved and geekiest body. 30 seconds of talk about rural broadband deployments and spectrum allocation is enough to send most people running from the room. But don't be fooled: the FCC wields a huge amount of power over one of the nation's most critical pieces of infrastructure, and right now, it's a mess. The hot-topic issue in the FCC is net neutrality. We're not going to try and rehash the argument right now, but in a nutshell, Trump-appointed commissioner Ajit Pai is moving to roll back rules that allow the FCC to enforce net neutrality rules on internet service providers. Net neutrality is bad for the bottom line of internet providers, since it prevents them from using the regional monopoly power that they have to rip off customers. Pai has given lip service to being in favor of net neutrality -- he wants a gentleman's agreement with the ISPs to uphold the "spirit" of net neutrality -- but he's working to dismantle the framework that allows the FCC to make and enforce rules to protect net neutrality. Pai, a former Verizon lawyer, claims (falsely) that net neutrality hurts investment by ISPs, and that the magic free hand of capitalism will protect consumers anyway (it won't). But the FCC's anti-consumer agenda doesn't end at net neutrality. In recent days, the commission has considered redefining "high-speed" broadband at a lower speed -- 10Mbps, to be specific, down from the 25Mbps it's currently at. Doing so would overnight make the US's internet market look a lot better. Right now, 80% of Americans have only one option for high-speed broadband at home, assuming they have any choice at all. That's because for most people, the only high-speed option is the cable network, and as you well know, most people don't have a choice of cable provider. But alongside the cable line running into your house, there's also normally a copper telephone line. It's possible to get ADSL internet speeds of up to 10Mbps over a phone line, which means that if you redefine "high-speed" as 10Mbps, many more Americans will overnight get a second option for high-speed internet. Expect President Trump to crow about how more Americans than ever before have access to high-speed internet in the coming days. Then, there's the FCC's new advisory panel. As The Daily Beast notes, Pai has filled the 30-person Broadband Deployment Advisory Committee (BDAC) with 28 reps from telecoms companies, and just two from local cities. The committee was supposed to work out how cities and companies can work together best to deploy high-speed wireless internet; instead, it will likely be a list of telecoms industry wishes that the FCC will use its power to push through local government. This isn't how it's supposed to work. Without wanting to wave the hammer and sickle while singing Les Mis, internet service providers are using valuable public resources -- our roads, airwaves, and federal subsidies -- to provide a valuable service. The FCC is supposed to regulate those services and ensure that our scarce resources are being used optimally, not work out how to best maximise profits for a handful of gargantuan corporations. You can guess which the current FCC is doing.......

Dalai Lama cancels Botswana visit "due to exhaustion"

Exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has cancelled a planned visit to Botswana because of exhaustion, his office said, a move that is likely to be welcomed by China, a major investor in the African country. The Dalai Lama had been expected to address a human rights conference in the capital Gaborone on Aug. 17-19 and meet Botswana's president during the trip. Visits by the Dalai Lama to foreign countries infuriate China, and it stepped up warnings to Botswana last month, with its Foreign Ministry spokesman demanding "the relevant country earnestly respect China's core interests and make the correct political decision on this matter".......

Nasa to wake up New Horizons spacecraft for voyage into mysterious Third Zone

Nasa is to wake up its New Horizons spacecraft next month following a five month hibernation, ahead of a journey deeper into one of the most mysterious regions of the Solar System. New Horizons, which captured incredible images of Pluto in July 2015, was powered down in April to conserve energy as it travelled through the Kuiper Belt, a vast region of icy debris which encircles the Sun and planets, also known as The Third Zone. On September 11, the spacecraft will awaken for its 16 month journey to MU69, an ancient object which is thought to be one of the early building blocks of the Solar System. The space rock had not even been discovered when the craft launched in 2006 and the flyby will be the most distant in the history of space exploration, a billion miles beyond Pluto, and four billion miles from Earth. Recent observations of MU69 from the Hubble Space Telescope show it is probably two 'binary' objects or a pair of space rocks 'stuck-together' bodies which are each around 12 miles across. An artist's impression of MU69 Credit: NASA/JHUAPL/SwRI/Alex Parker Alan Stern, Principal Investigator for New Horizons at Nasa, said:"We are very likely going to a primordial binary in the Kuiper Belt, a four-billion-year-old relic of Solar System formation and an exotic building block of the small planets of the Kuiper Belt like Pluto. "It may even be a swarm of smaller bodies left from the time when the planets in our solar system formed. "New exploration awaits us. It promises a scientific bonanza for the flyby." The first close up image of Pluto, taken by New Horizons Credit: Nasa New Horizons was the fastest spacecraft to ever launch and is partly powered by nuclear energy. When it launched in January 2006 Pluto was still a planet, but just a few months later it was downgraded to a dwarf-planet or 'plutoid' and is now known officially as 'asteroid number 134340' After studying objects in The Kuiper Belt, the spacecraft will eventually leave the Solar System, a feat only achieved by Voyager so far. And it is carrying the ashes of the scientist who discovered Pluto, Clyde Tombaugh. Tombaugh died on January 17 1997, nine years and two days before New Horizon's launch, but one of his final requests was for his ashes to be sent into space. Bagel family's son arrested on suspicion of murdering his mother and sister in north London home

The son from a world renown London family-run bagel firm has been arrested over the double murders of his mother and sister at their £1.5m home. Joshua Cohen, 27, was found in a north London park after officers launched a manhunt following the discovery of the bodies of his mother, named locally as Leah, 66, and sister Hannah, 33, at the family's home in Golders Green. The pair had been stabbed to death in what police have described as "a devastating attack". Detectives were called at 8.50pm on Friday night to reports two women had been seriously injured and pronounced them dead at the scene. Hannah Cohen, 33, was found stabbed to death with her mother in Golders Green, north London. The family run the world renown Beigel Bake in Brick Lane, London, which was set up by Mr Cohen's late father Asher with his brother and another partner in 1974 and was first Britain's first bagel bakery. Mr Cohen had worked in the family business, which is now predominantly run by his brothers. A family friend told the Telegraph: "I find it it quite shocking what's happened. Josh used to come and go but it was mostly his brothers Nathan and Daniel who worked there." On his Facebook page Mr Cohen lists his last employment had been at a Costa Coffee store. Detectives said Mr Cohen has mental health issues and suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. His sister Hannah, who had studied psychology at City University London, was a former pupil at the prestigious Carmel College, Wallingford. The family run the Beigel Bake business in Brick Lane. Credit: Jenny Matthews / Alamy Stock Photo Her former schoolfriend told the Telegraph it was a "tragedy". A neighbour said it was "sickening". "It's absolutely sickening, the police presence afterwards was crazy so I knew something really serious had happened," Following a police appear, a member of the public reported seeing Mr Cohen in Golders Hill Park, north west London, yesterday afternoon. Detectives arrested him shortly afterwards and he is presently at a north London police station undergoing questioning. Detective Inspector Ian Lott from the Homicide and Major Crime Command said: "Following a recent media appeal a discerning member of the public alerted police to a real time sighting and officers moved quickly to detain and arrest the man wanted for questioning shortly before 2pm. "This was a devastating attack on two women in their homes. Our investigation is ongoing." Police at the scene of the double murder of Hannah Cohen and her mother Leah in Golders Green. Credit: Paul Grover A 44-year-old neighbour added: "I'm really shocked and upset by what has happened. I know Josh from being about. Sometimes we'd be outside and smoke a cigarette together. "I know of his mum and sister, the family were very private. "I knew them to say hello to but not well. "His mum was disabled, mentally and psychically and she had a lot of help at the house. "I've spoken to Josh and sat on the wall and had a cigarette with him - it was that type of relationship. "I last saw Josh on Friday night when I was coming back from Sainsbury's. He crossing the road. "He was wearing a big red hooded fleece with a logo on it and grey tracksuit bottoms and was heading towards the tube station." Staff at Beigel Bake were too upset to talk last night. Mr Cohen senior, who died in December aged 81, arrived in the UK from Israel in the 1960s and worked at his brother's bakery next door initially before branching out and opening his bagel business. Beigel Bake, famed for its salted beef bagel, started out as a wholesale business and almost everything was made by hand in traditional Jewish style. It remains a 24 hour bakery and produces 7,000 bagels everyday.......

The big loser during the eclipse? Solar power.

When the total solar eclipse hits on Aug. 21, it's going to be quite the party. The problem? Solar panels need the sun to generate electricity. With the sun dimmed, solar energy sources will be affected. More than 100 million solar panels are expected to be affected, which will drop output by 20 percent — or the equivalent of all the energy the city of San Francisco uses in a week. SEE ALSO: 20 questions you're too embarrassed to ask about the solar eclipse Previous eclipses like the one that blotted out Europe in 2015 can give us a heads up on how much solar power will plummet. In Germany, which leads the world in solar power usage, output dropped from 14 gigawatts (GW) to 7 gigawatts, according to Gizmodo. Here in the states, utility-scale solar production is about 21.25 GW. It helps that the eclipse won't totally black out the sun over California and other states where the most solar energy is generated, so it won't disrupt the power grid. But it'll still mess things up. More than 1 percent of all energy used in the U.S. comes from solar, a figure that is increasing rapidly as the cost of solar panels plunge. A North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) white paper found that the eclipse is unlikely to cause any real issues with the power system, in part because the path of totality does not cut across the biggest solar generating states. More likely it will show us how to prepare and plan for power disruptions, now and in the future. It's really California, and North Carolina to some extent, that will be the most impacted. California is the top solar generating state in the country, home to about 40 percent of the country's installed solar generating capacity, according to the Energy Information Administration. The California Independent System Operator (CAISO), which supplies energy for the state electrical grid, estimates that the eclipse will push the grid to find up to 6,000 megawatts (MW) from alternative sources — keep in mind one MW powers about 1,000 homes. Edison @SCE working with @California_ISO to plan for partial ☀️#SolarEclipse2017 on Monday, August 21.https://t.co/QqGC4tdxQ0 pic.twitter.com/ElxjYWekXL — Haig Kartounian (@SCE_HaigK) August 10, 2017 But along with state energy agencies and utilities, the ISO has been prepping for the eclipse and the loss of solar power for more than a year. In a release about the solar event, CAISO wrote, "While the ISO has enough energy supply to make up for lost solar production during the eclipse, consumers should always use energy wisely." That's where programmable thermostats like Nest are gearing up to help take on the energy disruption. In an effort to keep our power grid from resorting to "dirty" energy from coal, nuclear, natural gas and fossil fuels, the Google-owned company is asking its customers to cut back on its energy usage during the eclipse. Project Eclipse will offer an opt-in campaign. Ben Bixby, head of energy partnerships at Nest, is realistic about the relatively small loss of solar energy from the eclipse. "There's no real danger of apocalypse," he said in an interview. Bixby anticipates Nest users' reduced energy use will "make a meaningful difference on the grid on this particular day." For eclipse day, Nest users can voluntarily join the energy-saving effort, similar to the company's ongoing Rush Hour Rewards program that launched in 2013 that pays customers for cutting back on energy at peak times. On the device, an eclipse image will appear and ask if users want to participate in the special solar eclipse rush hour. Energy savers won't be paid this time, however. Here's what customers will see to participate in Project Eclipse.Image: nestThe entire California Public Utilities Commission is collecting pledges from residents to "do your thing for the sun." That means finding ways to reduce electricity usage the day of the eclipse. The state utility, like Nest, wants to burn fewer fossil fuels while the state's solar energy produc
