Bagel family's son arrested on suspicion of murdering his mother and sister in north London home

The son from a world renown London family-run bagel firm has been arrested over the double murders of his mother and sister at their £1.5m home. Joshua Cohen, 27, was found in a north London park after officers launched a manhunt following the discovery of the bodies of his mother, named locally as Leah, 66, and sister Hannah, 33, at the family's home in Golders Green. The pair had been stabbed to death in what police have described as "a devastating attack". Detectives were called at 8.50pm on Friday night to reports two women had been seriously injured and pronounced them dead at the scene. Hannah Cohen, 33, was found stabbed to death with her mother in Golders Green, north London. The family run the world renown Beigel Bake in Brick Lane, London, which was set up by Mr Cohen's late father Asher with his brother and another partner in 1974 and was first Britain's first bagel bakery. Mr Cohen had worked in the family business, which is now predominantly run by his brothers. A family friend told the Telegraph: "I find it it quite shocking what's happened. Josh used to come and go but it was mostly his brothers Nathan and Daniel who worked there." On his Facebook page Mr Cohen lists his last employment had been at a Costa Coffee store. Detectives said Mr Cohen has mental health issues and suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. His sister Hannah, who had studied psychology at City University London, was a former pupil at the prestigious Carmel College, Wallingford. The family run the Beigel Bake business in Brick Lane. Credit: Jenny Matthews / Alamy Stock Photo Her former schoolfriend told the Telegraph it was a "tragedy". A neighbour said it was "sickening". "It's absolutely sickening, the police presence afterwards was crazy so I knew something really serious had happened," Following a police appear, a member of the public reported seeing Mr Cohen in Golders Hill Park, north west London, yesterday afternoon. Detectives arrested him shortly afterwards and he is presently at a north London police station undergoing questioning. Detective Inspector Ian Lott from the Homicide and Major Crime Command said: "Following a recent media appeal a discerning member of the public alerted police to a real time sighting and officers moved quickly to detain and arrest the man wanted for questioning shortly before 2pm. "This was a devastating attack on two women in their homes. Our investigation is ongoing." Police at the scene of the double murder of Hannah Cohen and her mother Leah in Golders Green. Credit: Paul Grover A 44-year-old neighbour added: "I'm really shocked and upset by what has happened. I know Josh from being about. Sometimes we'd be outside and smoke a cigarette together. "I know of his mum and sister, the family were very private. "I knew them to say hello to but not well. "His mum was disabled, mentally and psychically and she had a lot of help at the house. "I've spoken to Josh and sat on the wall and had a cigarette with him - it was that type of relationship. "I last saw Josh on Friday night when I was coming back from Sainsbury's. He crossing the road. "He was wearing a big red hooded fleece with a logo on it and grey tracksuit bottoms and was heading towards the tube station." Credit: Paul Grover Formal identification and post mortem examinations have yet to take place but police are confident they know the identify of the victims. Their next-of-kin have been informed. Staff at Beigel Bake were too upset to talk last night. Mr Cohen senior, who died in December aged 81, arrived in the UK from Israel in the 1960s and worked at his brother's bakery next door initially before branching out and opening his bagel business. Beigel Bake, famed for its salted beef bagel, started out as a wholesale business and almost everything was made by hand in traditional Jewish style. It remains a 24 hour bakery and produces 7,000 bagels everyday.......

The big loser during the eclipse? Solar power.

When the total solar eclipse hits on Aug. 21, it's going to be quite the party. The problem? Solar panels need the sun to generate electricity. With the sun dimmed, solar energy sources will be affected. More than 100 million solar panels are expected to be affected, which will drop output by 20 percent — or the equivalent of all the energy the city of San Francisco uses in a week. SEE ALSO: 20 questions you're too embarrassed to ask about the solar eclipse Previous eclipses like the one that blotted out Europe in 2015 can give us a heads up on how much solar power will plummet. In Germany, which leads the world in solar power usage, output dropped from 14 gigawatts (GW) to 7 gigawatts, according to Gizmodo. Here in the states, utility-scale solar production is about 21.25 GW. It helps that the eclipse won't totally black out the sun over California and other states where the most solar energy is generated, so it won't disrupt the power grid. But it'll still mess things up. More than 1 percent of all energy used in the U.S. comes from solar, a figure that is increasing rapidly as the cost of solar panels plunge. A North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) white paper found that the eclipse is unlikely to cause any real issues with the power system, in part because the path of totality does not cut across the biggest solar generating states. More likely it will show us how to prepare and plan for power disruptions, now and in the future. It's really California, and North Carolina to some extent, that will be the most impacted. California is the top solar generating state in the country, home to about 40 percent of the country's installed solar generating capacity, according to the Energy Information Administration. The California Independent System Operator (CAISO), which supplies energy for the state electrical grid, estimates that the eclipse will push the grid to find up to 6,000 megawatts (MW) from alternative sources — keep in mind one MW powers about 1,000 homes. Edison @SCE working with @California_ISO to plan for partial ☀️#SolarEclipse2017 on Monday, August 21.https://t.co/QqGC4tdxQ0 pic.twitter.com/ElxjYWekXL — Haig Kartounian (@SCE_HaigK) August 10, 2017 But along with state energy agencies and utilities, the ISO has been prepping for the eclipse and the loss of solar power for more than a year. In a release about the solar event, CAISO wrote, "While the ISO has enough energy supply to make up for lost solar production during the eclipse, consumers should always use energy wisely." That's where programmable thermostats like Nest are gearing up to help take on the energy disruption. In an effort to keep our power grid from resorting to "dirty" energy from coal, nuclear, natural gas and fossil fuels, the Google-owned company is asking its customers to cut back on its energy usage during the eclipse. Project Eclipse will offer an opt-in campaign. Ben Bixby, head of energy partnerships at Nest, is realistic about the relatively small loss of solar energy from the eclipse. "There's no real danger of apocalypse," he said in an interview. Bixby anticipates Nest users' reduced energy use will "make a meaningful difference on the grid on this particular day." For eclipse day, Nest users can voluntarily join the energy-saving effort, similar to the company's ongoing Rush Hour Rewards program that launched in 2013 that pays customers for cutting back on energy at peak times. On the device, an eclipse image will appear and ask if users want to participate in the special solar eclipse rush hour. Energy savers won't be paid this time, however. Here's what customers will see to participate in Project Eclipse.Image: nestThe entire California Public Utilities Commission is collecting pledges from residents to "do your thing for the sun." That means finding ways to reduce electricity usage the day of the eclipse. The state utility, like Nest, wants to burn fewer fossil fuels while the state's solar energy produc

White supremacists carry torches and chant Nazi slogans at rally in Virginia

Hundreds of white supremacists carrying burning torches and chanting Nazi-era slogans rallied in Virginia on Friday night before violently clashing with counter-protesters. The brawl at the University of Virginia came ahead of a much larger rally planned for Saturday, when thousands are expected for what monitors described as the "largest hate-gathering of its kind in decades in the US". The "alt-Right" demonstrators gathered late on Friday and chanted "blood and soil" and "one people, one nation, end immigration" as they carried burning torches through the university campus. #Charlottesville 9:56pm CHANTS: "One people, one nation, end immigration" & "blood and soil" pic.twitter.com/FbM1N8Ie1r— Alejandro Alvarez (@aletweetsnews) August 12, 2017 "Blood and soil" was a phrase commonly used by the Nazis to hail their ideas about racial superiority and traditional rural life. The mostly male crowd marched through the empty campus in Charlottesville and rallied around a statue of Thomas Jefferson, who designed the university's grounds. There they clashed with a small group of counter-protesters, who had linked arms around the statue. Several people were injured as punches were exchanged and pepper-spray was fired. Mike Signer, the mayor of Charlottesville, called the white nationalist march "a cowardly parade of hatred, bigotry, racism, and intolerance march down the lawns of the architect of our Bill of Rights". Larry Sabato, a professor at the university, said it was "the most nauseating thing I've ever seen" in his 47 years of being associated with the university. In my 47 years of association with @UVA, this was the most nauseating thing I've ever seen. We need an exorcism on the Lawn.— Larry Sabato (@LarrySabato) August 12, 2017 Richard Spencer, the provocateur credited with coining the term alt-Right, was also at the rally. The torch lit scenes on the university campus may be only a foreshadowing of the much larger demonstrations expected on Saturday at the Unite the Right rally - which is expected to bring together different factions of the alt-Right. Police expect that between 2,000 and 6,000 demonstrators will gather in Emancipation Park around a statue of Robert E Lee, a Confederate general during the American Civil War. White nationalist protesters have angrily opposed plans to take down statues of Lee and other Confederate figures who fought for the cause of slavery during the war. Don't make the white kids angry.#UniteTheRight#Charlottesvillepic.twitter.com/mBqUYAhVnK— Alt-Knight Right † (@populationwatch) August 12, 2017 The demonstrators accuse local governments of trying to erase history by removing the statues and often chant "you will not replace us" as they rally around the statues. The Southern Poverty Law Center, a group that tracks extremist organisations in the US, said that Saturday's rally may be the "largest hate-gathering of its kind in decades in the US". The city of Charlottesville had tried to get the protest moved to another park but the rally organisers sued and a judge ruled they must be allowed in Emancipation Park. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a civil liberties group, supported the nationalist demonstrators in their suit, saying that freedom of speech "applies equally to everyone regardless of their views". The ACLU has previously defended the right of the Ku Klux Klan and other extremist groups to hold rallies. The governor of Virginia has urged people to stay away from the rally and not to take part in counter-protests. ......

Violent protests break out in Kenya after Uhuru Kenyatta officially declared winner of presidential election

Gunfire echoed through the slums of Nairobi on Friday night after President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the winner of a disputed election, triggering a violent outpouring of anger in opposition strongholds. Screams and gunshots could be heard in several of the capital's poorer districts moments after the electoral commission sought to end a four-day impasse over the outcome of Tuesday's vote by announcing Mr Kenyatta's sweeping victory over his rival Raila Odinga. The president secured a second five-year term after winning 54 per cent of the vote, a 1.4 million vote margin that was larger than opinion polls suggested. The opposition rejected the result even before it was announced, complaining of "systematic" fraud. Supporters of the opposition leader Raila Odinga burn a tyre Credit: EPA With violent protests also being reported in Kisumu, Kenya's third city, there were fears that the former British colony could witness a reprise of the violence that claimed 1,300 lives after Mr Odinga's defeat in another election ten years ago. Members of Mr Odinga's Luo ethnic group attacked property belonging to members of the president's tribe in Nairobi's Kibera slum as police struggled to control the violence, despite being deployed in record numbers. "They are burning down Kikuyu homes," a resident said. With 180,000 security personnel drawn from the army, police and even the forestry service on standby, Kenyan authorities will hope to stamp out the violence quickly. A supporter wears a cloth wrap showing Kenya's incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta Credit: AP But many worry what the human cost of such a massive show of force might be. "There are gunshots all over," Lucas Odhiambo, a Kisumu resident, was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. "We don't know how it will end but we are praying for peace. Mr Kenyatta appealed for calm but there was no word from his vanquished rival, who has hinted that he may take his battle for the presidency, which he claimed to have won, to the streets. Moments before the official announcement was made, the opposition rejected the result and walked out of the main election centre. Kenya police officers stand guard ahead of Friday's announcement Credit: EPA A police officer stands guard at the national tallying centre as Kenyans await the announcement on Friday Credit: EPA "We are not going to be party to this," Musalia Mudavadi, one of the opposition coalition's five leaders, said. "Our issues have not been addressed." Defying international pressure, the Odinga campaign ruled out a legal challenge. "For us going to court is not an alternative," James Orengo, a manager of the Odinga campaign, said. "We have been there before." The opposition had earlier demanded that Mr Odinga be declared president after claiming an elaborate conspiracy to cheat him of victory. Supporter of Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga have pledged to take to the streets Credit: Reuters The opposition leader claimed that the electoral system had been hacked to alter the result in favour of his opponent and later accused the electoral commission of deliberately concealing the true result of the vote, which he said he had obtained from a whistleblower. The electoral commission said it had investigated and refuted Mr Odinga's claims, but, in a country with a history of electoral fraud and a reputation for deep-seated corruption, the pronouncement did little to alleviate the suspicion of opposition supporters. Yet many observers say they hope any violence is likely to be more limited than that which followed 2007 election, which was more antagonising because it appeared more obviously skewed against Mr Odinga. This time round, there has been greater scepticism about the opposition's rigging claims, although Mr Odinga is now attempting to put together a more coherent, if still unsubstantiated, case by addressing the most serious question hanging over the election's credibility. Seven members of Syria's White Helmets shot dead by unknown gunmen

Seven member of the Syrian White Helmets rescue group were shot dead by unknown gunmen on Saturday, sparking a manhunt and deep suspicions in the rebel-controlled province of Idlib. The men were killed in their operations centre in the village of Sarmin at dawn on Saturday. Two of their vehicles as well as several of their distinctive white helmets were stolen, the group said. Many White Helmet volunteers have been killed in airstrikes during the six year Syrian war but opposition activists said it was the first time that members had been shot dead like this. Photographs from the scene showed the volunteers' bodies lying across the floor of the centre and blood splashed over the logo of the White Helmets group. All had been shot execution-style at close range. A member of the Syrian civil defence volunteers mourns his comrades Credit: AFP PHOTO / OMAR HAJ KADOUR "The heart is saddened, there are tears in our eyes for you departure," said Raed al-Saleh, the founder of the White Helmets. "May God strengthen us and make us patient for facing this tragedy." One of the men killed was Mohammed Abu Kifah, who appeared in a widely-shared video last year where he wept with emotion after rescuing a baby girl from the rubble of a bombed-out building. The White Helmets have been lauded by Western countries for saving civilian lives in opposition areas in Syria and in 2016 they narrowly missed out on winning the Nobel Peace prize. But the group also operates in areas controlled by jihadists and supporters of the Assad regime regularly accuse them of allying with terrorists. Idlib province is now mainly controlled by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an Islamist rebel group that is dominated by jihadists linked to al-Qaeda. Activists in Idlib said they were baffled by the killings but did not think that HTS was responsible. The group has not targeted White Helmets in the past. One theory was that agents of the Assad regime had killed the men to create suspicion and distrust between rival rebel groups. The murdered White Helmets were buried on Saturday in Idlib Credit: OMAR HAJ KADOUR/AFP/Getty Images HTS recently fought an open battle against Ahrar al-Sham, another prominent rebel group, and there is lingering distrust in Idlib as a result. "The ones who did this are clever. They want to make conflicts worse between the rebel groups and show that there is no security and no safety in the opposition areas," said Abdulkafe al-Hamdo, an English teacher in Idlib. Another theory is that the killings were the work of a criminal gang, who wanted to steal equipment from the White Helmets centre. Two vans were taken from the centre as well as several motorcycles and some walkie-talkie equipment. One of the vans was later found burned out on the edge of a field several miles from the centre. That raises the possibility the White Helmets were killed with silenced weapons. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) has released videos in the past showing its fighters using guns equipped with silencers. The Assad regime also has access to silencers through its allies in Russia and Syria. Mr al-Hamdo said members of the group had last been seen on Whatsapp at around 1am, suggesting they were killed sometime after that. Gareth Bayley, Britain's special representative for Syria, condemned the killings. Again, my condolences to family & friends. I condemn this tragic killing. #Syriahttps://t.co/mHAdazJ4jV— Gareth Bayley FCO (@garethbayley) August 12, 2017 HTS has a network of checkpoints around Idlib province and activists said they hoped that the group's fighters would be able to catch the killers. Drone enthusiast 'amazed' as he lands device on deck of £3bn HMS Queen Elizabeth without being detected

It is a £3bn state-of-the-art investment, commissioned to reassert Britain's supremacy on the high seas. But this week the Royal Navy was left blushing after it emerged that an amateur enthusiast managed to land a £300 drone on the deck of HMS Queen Elizabeth - without anyone raising the alarm. According to local media reports in Scotland, the drone user managed to fly the drone past armed patrol boats before landing on the deck of the aircraft carrier. The pilot, who is yet to be named, told reporters this week that he had been "amazed" how easy it had been to carry out the stunt. "I was amazed that I was able to land on the aircraft carrier for two reasons, the first being that there was no one about to prevent it from landing although were security police around in small boats who were waving at the drone," he said. "The second reason was more technical. I received a high wind warning as I was videoing up and down the flight deck and my control system advised me to land." The rules on | Operating a drone He added that when attempted to discuss his concerns about security with crew members, he returned to find a "ghost ship". "There was absolutely no-one around when I landed, it was like a ghost ship," he continued. "After I posted the picture taken from the flight deck I got some flak from other drone users who were saying 'You are going to make a lot of people unhappy'. I thought the only law I had broken was that I flew over a vessel I didn't have control over. "I was a bit concerned so I drove round to Invergordon and spoke to the port security and explained that I wanted to speak to someone from the ship such as the duty watch or the captain about what I had done. "I was only able to speak to some heavily armed police, I think from the MoD, and they said there was no-one available on the carrier as they were at dinner ashore." "No-one seemed too concerned, but the officer I spoke to said he would pass it up the chain of command. I was fascinated by the Queen Elizabeth and wanted to have a crack at filming her. I wasn't out to get anyone in trouble. What's done is done, and I can't undo the images I shot. "I think if the MoD were in any way bothered by this then these videos and stills would not have been allowed to see the light of day." Fallon: Russia will look at HMS Queen Elizabeth with envy 01:16 Whilst the anonymous drone pilot appeared relaxed about his exploits, the disclosure has prompted concern among military and security experts. Speaking to The Daily Mail, Lord West, a former First Sea Lord, said it was worrying because terrorist groups such as Islamic State had already used drones in the Middle East to launch bombs. He said: "Daesh [Islamic State] are already using drones to deliver bombs in Syria, so I think it is something we need to take very seriously. "The fact drones can reach it is a worry. The Queen Elizabeth is doing some work with helicopters and if a drone hits a helicopter that could be very dangerous. "We need to have harsher punishments if you fly a drone into a carrier's air space. There's a real risk from drones and [it's] something we need to take very seriously." Commenting, an MoD spokesperson said: "We take the security of HMS Queen Elizabeth very seriously. This incident has been reported to Police Scotland, an investigation is underway and we stepped up our security measures in light of it."......

Drone enthusiast 'amazed' as he lands device on deck of £3bn HMS Elizabeth without being detected

Guy who dated six women on the same night defends his actions

A casanova who organised dates with six women on the same night and became the subject of a viral Twitter thread has defended his actions. Justin Schweiger found himself at the centre of a Twitter storm after one of his dates revealed to the world he had booked six consecutive dates at a bar in Washington DC. His plan backfired when his date number one, Lisette Pylant, livetweeted the evening and explained to the other women they were all on dates with the same guy. She explained: We meet up at a bar my friend works at. Said friend proceeds to text me telling me this guy sucks and I should run— Lisette Pylant (@LisettePylant) August 7, 2017 So 45 mins in his next date shows up because he double books himslef and he decides he's going to friendzone me to get out of the situation— Lisette Pylant (@LisettePylant) August 7, 2017 She then decided to 'steal' his dates: We're now all hanging out at another bar together pic.twitter.com/jasDbaDQCL— Lisette Pylant (@LisettePylant) August 8, 2017 In an interview with Inside Edition, Mr Schweiger said he never meant to be disrespectful to the women, but claims he never actually told them it was a date. "I do stack my dates. I do typically book them at the same place. I'm very time-oriented, efficiency-oriented," he explained. "I know it's kind of taken that realm [of him being disrespectful]. I'm sorry this happened." He added: "But I've been very upfront with all of them. I never said, 'let's go on a date'. I always said, 'Let's meet for drinks'. "If I take you on a date, you will know it's a date. There will be flowers and some dinner and some other cool things involved." Since the date night fiasco, the six women have become friends, while the lothario insists: "I'm just looking for love." Back at the scene of the crime! Kenya's opposition party claim election results rigged and demand Raila Odinga be made president

Kenya's disputed election was thrown into further turmoil on Thursday after the losing opposition said the result had been faked and demanded its leader be handed the presidency. Amid mounting anxiety in a country haunted by its history of post-election violence, Raila Odinga's opposition coalition accused the body responsible for conducting the poll of deliberately denying its leader the presidency. Widening an alleged conspiracy to hand re-election to President Uhuru Kenyatta, the opposition said that a "whistleblower" at the electoral commission had disclosed the existence of a hidden database showing that Mr Odinga had beaten his rival by 250,000 votes. Map: Kenya counties "We demand that the IEBC chairperson announce the presidential election results forthwith and declare Raila Amolo Odinga… as the duly elected president," Musalia Mudavadi, one of the opposition coalition's leaders, told a press conference. Provisional results released by the commission, known as the IEBC, on its website indicated that Mr Kenyatta had a lead of more than 1.4m votes — or nearly 10 per cent — after nearly all ballots had been tallied. President Uhuru Kenyatta celebrates during a campaign rally in Nairobi Credit: EPA The new allegations, which leave the country in an increasingly perilous and uncertain position, come a day after Mr Odinga rejected the result, claiming that IEBC computer servers had been hacked to alter the result. Although that allegation was roundly ridiculed, the IEBC's chairman, Wafula Chebukati, admitted that an attempt to hack the database had been made, but insisted that it had been detected and thwarted. Supporters of Kenyan presidential candidate Raila Odinga wave as he departs in a helicopter after addressing a rally Credit: AFP Mr Odinga's refusal to concede sparked fury among his supporters, many of whom seem convinced that their candidate has again be rigged out of victory. His defeat in an election ten years ago triggered the worst violence in independent Kenya's 54-year history, killing more than 1,300 people and forcing 600,000 more to flee their homes. Small-scale protests erupted in the slums of Nairobi and elsewhere in the country and police shot dead at least two protesters they accused of looting. Most opposition supporters have so far heeded calls from their leaders to remain calm until an official declaration of the winner is made. But now that Mr Odinga has not just rejected the result but also claimed victory, the prospect of an angry backlash by his supporters seem much higher if President Kenyatta is formally given a second and final five-year term. An official declaration is expected on Friday. Kenya's electoral commission denied the allegations, with one official telling Reuters that the opposition did not have "any credible data" on the results. A supporter wears a cloth wrap showing Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta, with writing in Swahili reading "President Uhuru, Five More" referring to the wish for another 5-year term Credit: AP Mr Odinga has long nursed a sense of grievance after being on the losing side of three questionable elections. In 2007, many analysts believe he was cheated out of victory by the president's predecessor, Mwai Kibaki. Five years ago, he was also denied the chance of a run-off after Mr Kenyatta secured a first round victory by a margin narrow enough to raise suspicions. But there is much greater scepticism about Mr Odinga's claims this time round amid suggestions they smack of desperation. Foreign observers appeared to dismiss the credibility of opposition allegations of a hacking attack, with John Kerry, the former US secretary of state, saying he had seen nothing to make him question the poll's integrity. Mr Kerry pointedly referred to his own defeat in the 2004 American presidential election, while Marietje Schaake, leading the European Union's observer mission was even blunter. Here's where the clearest skies will be during the total solar eclipse

You won't see something like this again until 2316 — so you better get a good view. On Aug. 21, the solar eclipse's path of totality (in which the moon completely eclipses the sun) will exclusively cross the continental United States. Thanks to NASA, you can check which areas of the country will have the clearest skies on that day. Image: nasaThe locations with the highest likelihood of clear skies are shown in dark blue, while those with the most clouds are shown in white. The map was developed using satellite observations from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (trying saying that five times fast) sensor on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites. The map was compiled using data collected on Aug. 21 between 2000 and 2016. NASA also went ahead and created this map, which combines the likelihood of clear skies with the eclipse path of totality. The largest circles show where the total solar eclipse will occur—the darker the circle, the likelier chance the skies will be clear. Image: nasaSo, according to the maps, where are the best places in the United States to view the solar eclipse? That would be Salem, Oregon; Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Casper, Wyoming. Wherever you're located, happy eclipsing! Just remember to wear safety glasses. WATCH: 20 questions you're too embarrassed to ask about the solar eclipse ......

Sebastian Gorka says Rex Tillerson discussing military options is 'nonsensical'

An adviser to President Donald Trump said it was "simply nonsensical" to think that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson should discuss US military decisions in relation on North Korea. Sebastian Gorka, deputy assistant to the president, made the comments to the BBC amid reports of division within the Trump administration on how to handle North Korea. Mr Tillerson has appeared to leave open the possibility of dialogue with the rogue regime over its nuclear weapons programme. But Mr Gorka, a hardliner in the administration, told the BBC: "You should listen to the president. The idea that Secretary Tillerson is going to discuss military matters is simply nonsensical. "It is the job of Secretary (James) Mattis as Secretary of Defence to talk about military options, and he has done so unequivocally. Sebastian Gorka Credit: Getty "Secretary Tillerson is the chief diplomat of the United States, and it is his portfolio to handle those issues." Mr Gorka said Washington would use "any appropriate measures" to protect the US from threats from North Korea. He said: "Donald Trump has been unequivocal. He will use any appropriate measures to protect the United States and her citizens. We do not telegraph our future scenarios and how we are going to react." In Washington a Sate Department spokeswoman, Heather Nauert, appeared to hit back at Mr Gorka's comments. She said: "He (Mr Tillerson) is a Cabinet secretary. He's the fourth in line to the presidency. He carries a big stick. "I think that everyone has clearly heard what Secretary Tillerson's forceful comments have been and continue to be." Mr Trump himself said there were "no mixed messages" from his administration.......

A 'conversation' with Google's recently fired Tech-Bro-in-Chief

The man behind the infamous Google memo has decided he'd like to further his career in shitty memos by writing an editorial for The Wall Street Journal. On Friday, James Damore published a "Well, Actually" piece for the Journal, technically titled "Why I Was Fired." In it, Damore claims that he was the innocent victim of the leftwing ideological echo chamber that is Google: a company that, it should be noted, remains 69% male and 56% white. As a biological woman, I'm too highly neurotic and cooperative to confront Damore directly. I would, however, still like to have a conversation with him that showcases my evolutionary tendency to be agreeable, cooperative and enthusiastic!!!! SEE ALSO: Google reportedly fires engineer for sexist 'manifesto' Below are portions of Damore's piece and my far inferior rebuttal (it's not sexism, guys, I'm just genetically not as talented as him). Damore: I was fired by Google this past Monday for a document that I wrote and circulated internally raising questions about cultural taboos and how they cloud our thinking about gender diversity at the company and in the wider tech sector. Dockray: Woooow, that's terrible! Small edit: I believe you were technically fired because you don't believe 31% of your coworkers are more than a stereotype. Damore: I suggested that at least some of the male-female disparity in tech could be attributed to biological differences (and, yes, I said that bias against women was a factor too). Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai declared that portions of my statement violated the company's code of conduct and "cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace." Dockray: That's awful! As a woman, I really appreciate it when a male engineer suggests I struggle with neuroticism and anxiety because I don't have a penis. #NewProfilePic pic.twitter.com/EaD4tKoH21 — James Damore (@Fired4Truth) August 10, 2017 Damore: ... having these views challenged can be painful, so we tend to avoid people with differing values and to associate with those who share our values . . . [Nowadays] we are more mobile and can sort ourselves into different communities; we wait longer to find and choose just the right mate; and we spend much of our time in a digital world personalized to fit our views. Dockray: YES. Though I'm not 100% sure that if I was less "mobile" I would want to become bffs with someone who wants to " demoralize diversity " and "de-emphasize empathy". Please never run for public office. Damore: Google is a particularly intense echo chamber because it is in the middle of Silicon Valley and is so life-encompassing as a place to work. With free food, internal meme boards and weekly companywide meetings, Google becomes a huge part of its employees' lives. Some even live on campus. Dockray: Sounds like they definitely don't have enough money to fund those diversity programs. Damore: In my document, I committed heresy against the Google creed by stating that not all disparities between men and women that we see in the world are the result of discriminatory treatment. Dockray: That is correct, you did. Damore: When I first circulated the document about a month ago to our diversity groups and individuals at Google, there was no outcry or charge of misogyny. I engaged in reasoned discussion with some of my peers on these issues, but mostly I was ignored. Dockray: Good job, most of your peers. Damore: Everything changed when the document went viral within the company and the wider tech world. Those most zealously committed to the diversity creed — that all differences in outcome are due to differential treatment and all people are inherently the same — could not let this public offense go unpunished. Dockray: Yo liberals: can you please show a little more respect for "de-emphasize empathy" conservatives? #BothSides Damore: When the whole episode finally became a giant media controversy, thanks to external leaks, Google had
